After a bit of research, I've decided I want to get a Rooney style 1 in ebony. Having a tough time deciding the size though. As a newbie, I only have experience with the VDH boar (hated it!), and my daily brush, a Vintage Blades-branded brush ('finest' badger, 22mm/50mm). I like it, but I want to see what the Rooney/Simpson world is like (and start a 'rotation'). The Rooney size 2 is 24/50, while the size 3 is 26/52. I like the idea of the 1/3 to differentiate it greatly from my VB brush, but I worry it might be too big. Is the 1/2 more manageable for face lathering? Any thoughts either way? I've also considered the Simpson Duke 3, so of there are any opinions about that brush vs. the Rooney I'm interested in, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!
I have a 3/2 and use it for face lathering. It's plenty big and I don't think I would want a 3/3. FWIW, my next Rooney is going to be a 1/1, which should still be a nice size for face lathering. Oh, and you'll love your new Rooney!
Any of the three sizes are well suited for face lathering, it is up to your individual preferences as to which to go with. The size 2 would be my recommendation. It is larger than your VB and will bloom more (three band vs two band finest VB) but shouldn't feel too big on the face. I prefer large brushes and the Simpson CH3 three band super is plenty controllable for face lathering IMO. As always, YMMV.
