I just got a 1968 Gillette Travel Tech off of Ebay. It was miscatagorized so I think I scored. It was $6.99 plus three bucks freight. It has never been used. I've got to think its worth $30.00 or more. And I wanted a travel razor for my mini-collection.
Received it. Haven't shaved with it yet. Turns out it is a 1967 M3. The thing is super tiny. It looks like the head and base are a denser plated material and the handle is aluminum. It will make for a nice travel razor because it's so small. I am expecting it will shave great just like it's larger brother the ball end tech. Tomorrow will tell.
Well I finally got around to shaving with my Travel Tech this morning. Put an Astra SP blade in it and went to town. On the final pass she bit me! Had to break out the styptic pencil for the very first time. I shouldn't say it was all her fault. The Astra blade was pulling and I modified my technique to use super short strokes. It was working but I put too much pressure into one of the strokes and got nicked. So 1/3 her - 1/3 technique - 1/3 blade. I will try her again with a Feather and see how that goes. I didn't find the short handle to be much of a problem. Had to say she is more aggressive than my Fatboy at 3.
Actually that looks like the brass handle Travel Tech. The aluminum handle has a different pattern. Here is an aluminum handle travel.
Nice one Glenn. That looks like it's in unused condition. I've been on the lookout for one like that if I see one. I think the Tech is probably my favorite vintage Gillette. It takes me 4 passes + touch ups but I always get nice irritation free shaves from them. The TTO's are ok but there's a smoothness to the 3-piece design that I really enjoy.
The color of the handle seem to match the head (nickel), so probably it is nickel plated brass. Nevertheless, there are aluminum handles with the same pattern: http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/Tech/1967 (M3) Tech Traveler.JPG
Just wanted to chime back in on this thread. It seems I was incorrect in my assessment. Gillette did make a travel in the aluminum handle in the classic "diamond" pattern knurling. I've seen a few since posting in this thread. Not sure if that's what OP has....as it still looks like nickel plated brass from the pics. But thought I should clarify that I was incorrect.
