Well, I've gone and done it. I've reached the 10K posts milestone.

To show my appreciation for all TSD has done for me, I'm passing along a $10 Gift Certificate good at the TSD Shop.

For those who don't know, please read this ---> *click here* It explains how and why The Shave Den is free to those of us who use it. All the money the TSD Shop receives is put into running this forum.
So by me purchasing a Gift Certificate, I'm helping to keep The Den up and running.

Now, that Gift Certificate will go out to one lucky winner to show how much I appreciate all the help, advice, and support I've received from all of you.

The winner (I'll use the list randomizer and the 10th person down the list) will be announced when I reach my next milestone, June 13th, my four year anniversary here at TSD.

Here's all you gotta do: Post saying you're in, AND offer up that one piece of advice that has been most beneficial to you to help you along your road toward the perfect shave. It may be about technique, prep, lathering up a dream cream, what you do for your post shave - anything that you feel may help someone else. Doesn't matter if someone posts the same advice you were going to give, if it's that good, it's worth repeating!

The best advice I got , well maybe it isn't really advice but I hope it counts. It's: YMMV :)
Don't give in too much to everything people say about some things, try it, and see for yourself

I'm in. Best advice I got was to get a Whipped Dog Silver Tip. It changed my world and now I'm obsessed with badger brushes! Glad I found what makes me happy. To each his own.

    Congrats & great PIF, Steve!

Don't count me in (my Den is overflowing as it is...).

The advice which helped me along a lot: take your time and enjoy the shave. Take it slow and savour your moment with your mirror image.

I'm in!!! Best advice I ever got was DO YOUR HOMEWORK. I read leisureguy's book cover to cover, watched several of Mantic59's videos and listened to some of the fine folk here before ever letting a blade touch my face. Almost every single shave I have had in over a month has been a pleasurable experience and have never had the need to pick up any stiptic!

Edit: Just remembered my boy Scott gave me great advice once. I was complaining about having to remake my lather if I made a bad lather. Here's what he told me: "Don't get upset about having to remake your lather, celebrate being able to make more lather. Enjoy spending more time shaving and take your time..." or something along those lines. Every since then I've enjoyed my shave much more and do not feel rushed or pressured during it.

Great PIF. I think I will sit this one out.

Advice: Don't be afraid to try a straight razor. Also, if you have a rough shave, invest in some witch hazel. I like Thayer's, but there are other brands too.

    Great I am in.

My advice is if you are new dont spend too much time and money trawling the Internet for razors. I did that. Later on I found that all the second hand shops around me had quite a few techs. Cheap, brilliant for learning. I could have saved a pretty penny and got better shaves.

Please count me in, and here is what I do to prevent ingrown hairs:

I dealt with ingrown hairs/red bumps my whole shaving life until I started DE wetshaving. This is what works for me:

I shave every day. One source of ingrown hairs is the hair grows, curls, makes a u-trun, presses on the skin and then grows back into the skin. Shave everyday to keep the whisker from growing and pressing on your skin. The benefit is you get to shave everyday!

Face lather every night before bed! The action of the brush helps lift the whiskers out of the skin. I do this every night as a pre-shave prep for the next morning. I use an inexpensive soap such as VDH deluxe or Clearly Natural. I follow this with a splash of witch hazel.

I Exclusively face lather. Again, the action of the brush lifts whiskers, making them easier to cut at the skin level.

Do not strectch the skin! I flatten certain areas, but never stretch. for me stretching leads to ingrown hairs and red bumps.

Pressure. This is where my opinion vastly differs from the majority and where YMMV! I use pressure. The razor should rest against the skin and be applied so as to cut the whisker, not tug it. It has to be a clean cut. No pressure results in the whisker being pulled and/or tugged. Carts cause ingrown hairs because they are dull, the first blade pulls the hair out, the second cuts the hair, and the whisker then recedes beneath the skin, only to become ingrown. It takes enough pressure so as to cut and not tug.

No south to north passes. 3 passes on the cheeks and 1 on the neck. this works for me. Again, YMMV.

Post shave treatment. Use witch hazel. I can now use splashes daily and balm once a week. Try TSD splashes as they are awesome!

Sharp blades! Again, cut, not pull or tug! I use a blade for only 3 shaves.

Adjustable razors. I like adjustable razors as they can be opened to allow for cutting. Agressive razors and settings seem to work best. Fits in with my theory of cutting and not tugging.

Soaps and creams. Use anything that is very, very slick. My issue has never been influenced by scent so I can use just about any fragrance, but stay away from anyting that burns your skin. I use soft soaps, creams, melt and pour soaps, and tallow soaps without any problems. My experience is to cut the hair withour tugging to prevent historesis.

I hope this helps. Again, YMMV. After 29 years of cart shaving I found de shaving and a little over a week thereafter kissed my ingrowns and bumps goodbye!

10K, amazing! Congratulations. Thank you for all the advice and kind comments. You made me feel welcome here from day 1.
Not in but thank you for the nice PIF.

Best advice: Make a good lather, use a sharp clean blade, concentrate on the angle, short even strokes, and no pressure. Most of all enjoy your time shaving, I do.
