I was getting a pretty noticeable stinging/burning after my shaves and I wasn't getting it before I was using a brush/soap set from wally's world so in another thread someone brought up i might have an allergic reaction to something in it. essentially i just made a lather and rubbed a smidge in several locations on my face until they were absorbed in my skin and sure enough, the burn!!

    BUT ANYWAYS!!
what soaps do you guys recommend? i love the creamy stuff in the tubs and i had an eye out for something with shea butter i found this

thoughts? suggestions? experiences? looking forward to any responses, thanks!

I, too, get a very mild reaction to sandalwood. Not bad enough to warrant discontinued use, just enough to let me know it's sandalwood.

Try Institut Karite, also a shea butter soap.

I have a similar experience with Lemon & Lime although I don't rate TOBS that highly. I would highly recommend Dr Harris range my favourite being Windsor. Also you can't go wrong with Proraso, if I had to have one soap that would be it.

Institut Karite is a very good shaving soap. Kell's Original is at least as good, and was formulated by someone with sensitive skin.

Pre de Provance is probably my favorite shave soap (besides tabac and cella) because of its baby powder smell ( they say sage, but what ever), nice lather and I have been using their body soaps for years. Its not overpowering and unfortunatly if you like it, the scent (especially after a splash of aftershave) doesnt linger. Their after shave balm matches it perfectly, and I use it 5 days out of 7 to quickly mosturize my face after the after shave has dissipated. Expensive, but a little dab l do ya'. If you like their soap, you'll love their balm.

If you have sensitive skin, another mellow soap is: http://www.ebay.com/itm/111053608106?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m149.l2649

You can never go wrong with proraso. Everything they make is top notch, from quality to how it works. What a company.

You write that this reaction did not occur until you used your purchase from Wallys World. Sounds like you have a reaction to one of the ingredients in the soap you are using. I looked up the ingredients of the soap and found this picture posted on a thread about it:

Note that in the list there is the word Parfum (Fragrance).
This is a general term for a synthetic perfume that is used in a product. It can be a combination of any number of compounds. Also, there are eight items on the ingredients list that are on the 2003/15/EU list that that are classed as “Allergens”. …starting with Linalool and running through Benzyl Benzoate and including citral.

Actually sandalwood essential oil ( along with Cedarwood essential oil) does not contain any substances that are listed in the EU as “Allergens”. The proper INCI listing for sandalwood essential oil on an ingredients list is Santalum Album (Sandalwood) Oil and it does not appear in the above list.

I would imagine that the source of these allergens is Perfume that is in the soap and that you are most likely having a reaction to one of them. I wrote and article about allergens in shaving products and it can be found here:

    http://shavenook.com/thread-the-sensitive-subject-of-allergens--13260

If you compare the ingredients list of TBOS with other shaving soaps that you have used, do you find any items on the TOBS that are not listed on the ingredients list of your previously used soaps?

Well I've only used the walmart brand soap so I'm unsure as to any patterns of ingredients, but i've bought some kells original soap and a gentleman offered to send me a tube of shaving cream so im going to try those and see what i like, based on the fact that TOBS doesn't use real essential oils or perhaps cuts it with other chemicals they have lost my buisness, thank you for this insight.

If you did not have a reaction to the Walmart Soap it is a good place to start. Check the ingredients list on it and compare it to the TOBS soap.

I looked online at some other advertisements of TOBS sandalwood. They are advertised as using essential oils but they do not list them by their by their INCI names on the ingredients list. However, the allergens, as required by the cosmetic regulations in the EU, are.

Most manufacturers would find it good for business to place the essential oils used on their ingredients list. Also, if they did use essential oils in their product, there is a question as to the proper listing of ingredients according to the cosmetic regulations.

I am interested in this now and am going to inquire into it.

    Update:

I called TOBS today and asked about the ingredients in the „Fragrance” for the Sandalwood shaving soap The representative I spoke with was unable to answer my question and needed to forward it to someone who could. I sent them an e-mail outlining the subject. A summary of the e-mail is:

The soap is advertised as being fragranced with essential oils however the INCI names of these oils do not appear on the label. Instead the term “perfume (Fragrance)” is used and the allergens are listed. [ Note: this does comply with the EU cosmetic directives] This can cause the assumption that a manufactured perfume mixture is the source of the fragrance and it is not entirely due to a mixture of essential oils.

The response I received this afternoon is:

    Dear Sir,

Thank you for your email and your phone call earlier.

We have forwarded this onto our fragrance house which will advise in due course. We will be in contact as soon as we have an answer, please be advised however that several people are currently on holidays so it may take longer than usual.

    Kind regards,

    Answer from TOBS:

I received this answer from TOBS today:

    Dear Michael,
Further to your enquiry we are pleased to confirm the following:
Our Sandalwood fragrance is a combination of essential oils none of which are synthetic.
    Kind regards,

Even though they used an all-encompassing term for their fragrance in their ingredients list, the components, according to the manufacturer, are all essential oils.

I hope you can narrow this down and that you don't have any more discomfort. If you're looking to get rid of it lets know. Good luck with figuring out what is causing your issues. I'd say stick with what you know works until you figure it out.
