I don't know if he ever had a lead role, but he was a great actor and played in many movies and television shows. It's funny I just saw him in an old episode of the original Untouchables series with Robert Stack. R.I.P Mr. Ansara...
They retconned that away in an episode of the Sara Jane adventures. They'll keep the show going as long as the Doctor's bringing in a profit.
