I am working on a custom storage case for my fletching jig (a tool for repairing and modifying arrows.) I saw something on the net (sorry, I no longer remember the site) about how to make a case that conforms to the shape of the items in it. I figure this would also be good for a razor display case, so I am posting it here. Materials; Straight-sided box Old t-shirt, or some other soft stretchy fabric Spray can of filler foam Old newspaper/magazines Rubber gloves Scissors 1) Lay the items out on the bottom of the box. Remember, this will be turned upside-down when you are done. 2) Lay the fabric over everything. Press it down around the items. 3) Fill with filler foam spray. 4) Cover with a few layers of paper and smooth it out a bit . You may want to cover it with a board & put a weight on it. This has to set for about 8 hours, so I will finish it tomorrow. At that time, I will remove it from the box & trim the excess fabric. More pics them.
It will be interesting to see how it turns out. I've seen several wood cigar boxes at local antique malls that would make great boxes for razors.
Here it is, just removed from the box & turned right-side up. Not perfect, but does the job. Next, you need to trim off the excess fabric & put it back in the box. I could have done a better job laying out the fabric and pressing it into the corners. That is not a problem for my purpose, but if I were to make a display for collectibles, I would want to be more precise.
No, it did not. I had wondered about that myself, before trying it. But it wasn't a problem (I suppose, because t-shirt material is sufficiently thick.)
Cigar boxes are so useful I went looking for more. Lacking a local antique shop, I searched online. I found that you could get a lot of 10 for $25 plus shipping from www.cheaphumidors.com. The boxes I got vary from pristine to a bit scuffed but all are made of wood (no cardboard) and all are in usable condition.
I thought this was a great idea but saw the $11 shipping, so looked a bit more. I found this site http://www.cigarsinternational.com/empty-boxes/36815/empty-box/ I ordered 10 boxes for $20 with free shipping. I will let you know what they look like when I receive them.
That is a better price, though I still can't be too upset at paying 3.50 per box. BTW, I looked at that site; it said free shipping if yu also ordered a lighter. Did you order it? (It looked pretty nice.)
No lighter, just the boxes. It may take up to 8 days for the free shipping. That may give me enough time to come up with a suitable response when my wife asks me why I ordered 10 cigar boxes.
Tell her the truth; they're cheap, attractive & good for storage. Then let her pick a couple for herself.
