Hi All, I have recently started using a Shavette type straight razor and am about to start with a conventional straight razor. I have a question about stropping. How critical is the chromium oxide paste on the strop? Do you use this every time you strop, or only occasionally? What purpose does it serve that the leather and canvas don't? Any input here, or a link to another thread that explains how all of the strops work will be much appreciated. Thanks
Welcome to The Shave Den! Not an expert but I'd have to say chromium oxide paste isn't too important. None of my strops have it on them. If you haven't yet, you may want to check out the Straight Razor Master Sticky.
Welcome to TSD! I have some, but haven't used it yet. Don't use straights often enough...But its certainly not necessary to use regularly. But others who know more may chime in later...
to TSD Javaman...........I hope you enjoy it here....... I'm a DE user myself, but I'm sure you'll find lots of help on your straight razor questions here...
Welcome to the Den! I'm a regular straight user (not daily, but a few times a week) for ab out 3 years now and I've never used a pasted strop and get by just fine.
I too, have never used it. But then again I don't hone my own razors. Its difficult to find someone in person to teach you (around here anyway). I don't use one every day; maybe once a week. I rub down my strop with my hand to keep it moist, that's really the only stop tip I can give. That and keep the edge and spine on the strop at all times. Welcome to the Den I hope you find what you're looking for!
Not an expert. I have the paste one side of my strop. I strop no paste (25 strokes) before every shave (4 times a week). I use the paste side(15 strokes) once a week. I have always used the paste so i cant carepare it to not having paste, but i do know that my 60 yr old straight razor will slice right through my thumb with no resistance. It also cleans my beard off, as if wiping dust of a shelf. The paste is reasonably priced. Welcome!
Welcome to the Den. We know you'll fit right in. So grab yourself a comfy chair, and give our threads a spin! Burma Shave
