If you are new to DE shaving, my vote would go to the Merkur HD, it's a good solid weighty razor that is also quite mild, its a good razor to start with while you refine your technique, its the razor I started with.. I am sure others will give their recommendations also. good luck to you and enjoy the journey!!
+1 on that! Fat handled techs are also a good beginner razor. They can be found on eBay, are cheap, forgiving shavers. More important than the razor is the blade. There are as many opinions on the best blade as there are varieties. Get a large sampler pack and find the one that works best for you. Everyone's face and beard is different. Your shave your way.
Hi! Welcome to the Den. Be sure to sign up for the October Newbie Give-Away. +1 on the HD and another + 1 for the sampler blade pack.
I might be the only shaver who regrets having had a Merkur HD as my first. My 2nd razor has been my favorite...a 1949 Gillette Super Speed.
Well...I vote i. Not sure what's going on with the poll. That being said, the Merkur 38c was my first razor and still one of my favorites. Welcome to TSD!
From what I've read here and on other forums, I think many (maybe 50-75% of) wetshavers who shave the dome use the Headblade or other cartridge razors, and save the DE shaving for the face. If you want to go vintage, then a Gillette flare tip Super Speed makes a nice mild starter razor. Modern razors are not really my thing, so I'll let others make that recommendation.
