I've been wanting to try replating and these kits seem like an easy & inexpensive way to get into it. I've also got a few razors that could use a little fresh plating. Just wondering if anyone has already tried these out and has an opinion on whether it gives acceptable results. I'm probably going to try nickel and maybe black chrome for now BTW. If that works, I might try gold. I've got several gold plated Gillettes with pretty worn finishes. Here's a link if you haven't seen what I'm asking about - http://www.caswellplating.com/plug-n-plate-brush-plating-kits.html
I've done a little Googling on it and it looks like a couple people have been able to get it to work. A few others said it was garbage. Oh well, I love a challenge. I'll probably put it on my Christmas list.
Any of your razors that are copper or brass will need to plated in nickle before trying to plate gold. I know this is the case when using an electroplating machine and the brass/copper will ruin the bath if not plated in nickle first. I don't know how thick of a plate you will be able to apply with this machine, but I would be interested to know your results.
I too have been interested in trying this kits. Please let us know how they turn out of you try them. A variable power supply would make it easier to keep your current flow in balance with the size of your work piece, but the kits that are available with better power supplies are much more expensive than the caswell kits.
Well, I got the kit for Christmas and tried my first razor. I think it turned out ok for a first attempt. This is with no polishing or anything. I'll do some of that and probably do a little more plating on it. I think this kit may actually give some pretty good results. I did not use the instructions BTW. I immersed the parts in the solution so it was pretty much the conventional way of electroplating. Here's the Gillette Old-type before. And after...
