Hey thanks everyone! I tried my Merkur for the first time last night, and it went OK. I didn't apply pressure and didn't cut myself. At the same time, I didn't feel like I was always getting the blade flush against my skin and clearing away the soap evenly. I was using a brand new blade, but I still also felt like the blade was "bouncing" really quickly, instead of running over smoothly. So even though I did multiple passes in multiple directions and reapplying in between, it wasn't a very close shave. I'm sure I'll get better at it. Maybe I need to get a thicker layer of soap. Can't wait to regrow a bit so I can try again.
Also...Welcome to TSD! Mike's is a superb soap and the Pine and Cedarwood variety is a super strong woodsy scent. If you are into that sort of thing, I'm sure you'll love it. You can find my impressions of it HERE.
CJames, actually your review is what made me want to get it!! I DEFINITELY want a super strong woodsy scent. That's exactly what I'm looking for. Yeah, I wonder if my razor isn't agressive enough. I have the Merkur 180 Long Handle, and if it's adjustable, I definitely don't know how to do so.
No, it is not adjustable. You would find an adjustment ring with numbers somewhere on the handle. If you're looking for a more aggressive razor, you can try shimming the blade while you're on the hunt for a new razor
Update: I've shaved two more times since my first shave. These past two times went MUCH better. Best shaves of my life. I think it just took some practice. Thanks a lot, guys.
I have the same razor and it works great. You just have to get your angle to the face correct, then it's just a matter of what blades your using.
Shaves are still going great! WHITE SOX. Even though I live a block from Wrigley, haha.... Is that the correct response?
Haha crap. If it helps, I actually root for the Cubs as long as they're not playing the Sox. Yeah I know, I'm not very opinionated when it comes to baseball...
