So I've been Hitting up all the flea markets and antique stores in the area over the past few weeks and today I came across this D3 and Tech for a $1.oo each. I couldn't pass them up. On the way home all I could think about was getting home and cleaning them up. Overall they turned out good for the first cleaning. The adjuster works great and everything seems to work fine. The only issue is the paint is missing below the adjuster. Is there a good way to repaint the black around the adjuster or is best to leave it alone. it surprises me that the paint wore off considering there isn't any major scratches.
Awesome deal....you cannot beat a buck apiece!!! I picked up a 1969 Tech today myself at a antique store for $5...probably paid too much but it is mint condition!! Buddy at work has been talking about wetshaving and mentioned the pawnstar guy and the razor he is promoting I told him to not waste his money...I am going to give it to him when I get back to work.
Thanks! I don't know what it is but over the past few weeks I have been able to score 4 Fatboys for under $5.oo along with a handful of Techs for the same price. I gave many away as Christmas gifts and kept a few to start my collection. I know my luck will run out sooner or later, but until it does I'll keep getting dirty hunting through the dust. I agree. Your buddy at work should appreciate that! It's a good feeling when you can hand over a nice piece to a pal. I recently just started collecting and wetshaving and I've looked all over the internet to try and find good deals. I've come to realize that I enjoy going out hunting and digging through piles and finding something rather than spending a lot for it online. I guess it means more to me doing it that way, plus it gives me the opportunity to share my hobby with people when I am out looking.
That's a nice looking fat boy! I love cleaning up these old razors. That's one of the most enjoyable parts for me! Great job.
I have done a few Fat Boys myself and that paint under the adjustment is always an issue. I think it may have to do with the number of times fingers are run over it when adjusting or maybe that it sees more soap and water than the other end of the razor over time. I do know that it in no way affects the functionality or the appeal fo the razor itself GREAT score! I may be hitting the thrift stores and yard sales again tomorrow based simply on hopes if hitting it half ass well as you did!
Congrats, VintagShave; that was a great find. For me, half the fun of finding the razors that I have is the "find" itself. My job requires travel through 4 states, and I have really enjoyed stopping by antique malls/stores, flea markets, and other "junk" shops along the way. It is amazing what you can find out there. As they say, "One man's trash is another man's treasure."
Thanks! What you said makes sense. I suppose over time and use the paint would begin to wear. I was just curious if anyone has tried repainting or if it's best to leave the way it is? Hopefully you find some good deals on your venture out! LOL! I chalk it up to beginners luck!!!
I have painted the ring under the adjuster and found that it just doesn't look right. I've repainted numbers with no problems but I never liked how it looked when I repainted the ring. The brass looks cool under there.
Thats awesome that you are able to cover a large area and able to visit different places. If your like me, I'm like a kid in a candy store! Thanks for the insight, Lutebro. Being new to collecting and cleaning them up, I wasn't sure what seasoned collectors do. What do you use for the numbers?
Same here. I think the numbers are easy since there is a stamped depression in the metal in which to place the paint and in which the paint will settle to create it own surface. Painting on any smooth surface like that ring I think will always result in a not so hot look. Perhaps if the razor was taken apart and that part were powder coated it might look far better and a lot smoother. Never known anyone to try that though. Any painters out there with an opinion?
I use Testors Black Enamel paint. I liken painting the ring to putting a flashy spoiler on a daily driver, just doesn't fit.
FOUR FatBoys in weeks for under $5 plus some Techs also(were they Fat Handle or Ball End handle Techs?).........Man you are blessed......Were I you I'd get me a few lotto tickets... Many people repaint the numbers and even the red adjustment indicator using something like testors paint...
I feel very blessed! I've tried my luck at the lottery in the past and failed I started my Den 16 days ago and it includes: 1906 Single Ring 4- Fatboys (D3,D4,E3,F2) I'm on the hunt for a G 4- Ball End handle Techs 2- Fat Handle Techs Total Spent: $44.00 Total Time Spent Searching and Cleaning Plus the Great Shaves to Come: Priceless It's been a great experience to learn the history of these great razors, and be able to share them with TSD! This is a great group of folks!
Well good for you and You need to carefully check "all" the hunting spots in your area as apparently it's still flush with game.. "FANTASTIC SCORE"!!!!!
