I'm not a straight razor user but I'd like a little info concerning them. I run across straights all the time at flea markets and while picking and just pass them by. If I knew a little more about them or what you guys & gals are looking for I would pick up a few to PIF. Any info would help.
Of the German made razors just about anything that says Solingen is good, of the ones from England anything that says Sheffield, just about anything Made In USA, especially Torrey, Genco, Geneva, HM Christensen, etc. to mention a few and anything made in Sweden.
If you can get them for <$10, you can pretty much wipe them down and clean house on eBay, just be honest about condition. If you get something special, have it restored and then make a few hundred on eBay......
Chips out of the blade are bad. Also, honewear along the spine, although not automatically disqualifying a razor, may make it harder to sharpen. Here's someone else that had this question a few years back- http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/straight-edge-pointers-for-shopping.20077/#post-362089
That's nice but I'm not looking to sell them. I would rather PIF them to people here on TSD. I see these things all the time for 5 bucks or less and figure you guys and gals would like to have them. Thanks for the replies! I'll now keep an eye out and maybe I pick up a few.
That's awfully nice of you BigT. For $5 it would be hard to go too wrong. Here's stuff I'd probably still look for - some already mentioned. Where it's made - Germany, Sheffield, and the U.S. are all pretty safe bets. Condition - cracks or chips are a deal breaker. A little rust may be ok but if it's got pitting on the edge, I'd pass. Some hone wear is ok but if it's excessive, I'd probably pass too.
That's good of you BigT. I was just throwing out an idea if you were interested in making some money. I haven't found any good cheap str8s in a while.
Thats a very nice gesture BigT! Me, I'm a little scared of straights so I don't intend to pick one up in a while if at all.
Why be afraid? I figured that's all my ancestors used for centuries. If they could do it, why can't I? So I do. Yeah, a bit of a learning curve, but slow and steady are key, along with respecting the blade and paying attention. I've nicked myself, to be sure, but never anything serious, not even enough to require a band-aid.
I figured they're called cut throat razors for a reason. I was thinking... maybe I will. Now if only I had a spare 100 or two.
I wanted to try striaghts, but didn't have spare couple hundred quid laying around either, so bought a dovo shavette. if i don't kill myself with that after a couple of months, i might invest (or look in charity shops) for a real straight. although i have read (after i bought it) that this isn't necessarily the best idea as the two are different technique/feel etc.
