IMO the best brush on a budget is one of the Omega Boar brushes. They are inexpensive compared to others and offer very soft tips after the initial break in period. The 10065 is one of my favorites.

Yep, I concur on the Omegas boars......the 48 (far left) & 49 (middle). Inexpensive, yet excellent brushes. :happy088:

Love the Omegas but I'd also like to mention the Semogue boar brushes. Many of them can be had for less than twenty bucks and they are lathering machines.

For some reason I prefer Omega knots too. The brush Dale recommended is a good one, IMO. And of course Semogue makes a good inexpensive brush also.

I'm a fan of the Semogue 610 or 830; great little inexpensive brushes.

The Omega Baby Pro 10029 is a very good medium sized brush. A medium sized brush is really versatile. It breaks in very quickly, within a few shaves really. It is a very good face latherer, works in a bowl and is great for creams and soaps. For under $9 it is a steal.

For boar I prefer Omega. If you want a great but cheap badger go with a whipped dog.

The best cheap brush($5 shipped) I've ever used and I am still using(2+ years) daily is the #6 horse(?) hair from bestshave.net out of Turkey...There is disagreement over whether the knot is actually horse hair(as advertised) or boar, but either way the brush works "GREAT" for me and at a "VERY" inexpensive price....:happy088:

My best "cheap" brush is a Tweezerman pure badger.

Can't go far wrong with either of the boar brush makers suggested already. Some of the Omegas and Semogues have more expensive handles than others and some are cheap (but still comfortable IMO) plastic, but all seem to have quality knots, irrespective of their price. A $10 or even $20 brush from either represents an incredibly good value, given the cost of most things these days.

The Omega 13564 & 13522 are both classically styled, a bit smaller and well under $10. The Semogue 1470 would make a great first brush as well, and it's just a few shekels more.

Van Der Hagen Boar, less than $10.00.

Van Der Hagen badger, less than $20.00.
both are sweet, good looking lathering machines.
    The Tweezerman badger, second choice.

I've heard only good things about Omegas, but I've never tired one, so I will second Semogue . They are excellent brushes and you can get them for 15$
