Citronella (which is used in bug repellent). Lemongrass is used to produce Citronella. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citronella_oil I used current Williams as my very first soap with a Burma Shave mug and had no problems whipping up lather with it.
I don't like the scent. I have a vintage Williams soap with no smell to it, and a puck of Williams from the 90's. It has a faint citronella smell, but not bad. The stuff on the shelves that is sold today is too strong for my nose.
The scent of Williams is not for everyone....... I have never tasted the Williams. I do however remember from childhood, how the Ivory tasted as I tasted it more than a few times myself.
I've always had an iron stomach and a nose that can handle anything, so I'm more worried about wasting my money on something I have a lot of trouble using
I don't get much of a citronella scent from the Williams, maybe just a bit of the lemon washing-up liquid scent, but that's about all. To my senses it just smells like soap really. Arko has the lemon washing-up liquid scent too, but I quite like it. From a couple of weeks ago - http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/trouble-with-williams.36867/#post-652317
The scent isn't strong and it lathers as easy as anything else for me. Water hardness is the determining factor with Williams or the Fat.
Dries up fast so times for me, tho some either add a few drops of glycerin to it or mix it with van Der Hagen soap to make van Der Williams
