Quiet Contemplation

Gentlemen,

Perhaps it is the reserved nature of the British but I have to say, that there are occasions when I have great difficulty in understanding certain aspects of this wonderful community we all share.

I was brought up in a world where you are polite and respectful to your fellows and any disputes you may have with another are dealt with man to man and in private. ‘One never does ones dirty washing in public’ and even if your world was falling apart, outwardly one shows a state of calm and order. ‘Quiet contemplation that’s the English way’ (Pink Floyd). This is of course a spin off of the Victorian times but never the less it is deep seated, certainly within me. It maybe not so important in the modern generation and some would say that it was probably out of fashion in my generation. However, it has served be well over the years and I consider myself above all things to be a Gentleman.

I have witnessed of late, not on this forum thank goodness (and I would hope never to witness it here…..) what I consider to be very poor behaviour indeed. This is where two giants of our community clearly have a personal and private grievance against each other and have basically aired their dispute in public. I have no intention of siding in the dispute as there are no doubt valid points raised on both sides. I have found the whole matter to be distasteful and disrespectful not only for the reader, who has no business reading it, But more importantly for the personal and public attack by the agrieved and the manner in which he ravaged the reputation of the other. I feel that no matter how aggrieved a person may feel, there can be no excuse for an abuse of power and in such a public domain.

I was wandering if I was the only person who thought like this? Perhaps I am old fashioned and should get in to the tabloid gutter press mentality. One thing the matter has done…… is remind me of the very reason why I came to ‘The Shave Den’ in the first place.

William, as I don't frequent the other boards often (only so many hours in a day!), I am not familiar with the situation to which you refer. However, it sounds most unpleasant and I agree that there is no place for the sort of behavior you describe...on a forum or anywhere else for that matter. I have been fortunate in that the forums in which I do participate are similar to this one. Everyone treats other members with respect..as certainly, it should be.

I am delighted with The Shave Den! The folks here are good natured and friendly, and while we digress from the business at hand frequently, in my view, that makes it even more enjoyable. Perhaps it's because we're smaller than other forums. I don't know. I DO know that I enjoy my time here and am very glad that we treat each other with civility and respect.

 

I believe both sides have a point but they should now let it rest.

 

I have to say it is a little vague for me to give a full opinion, since I do not go to any other forums at all. However certainly there are times when things simply should be handled in private. It is a case by case basis though.. depends who is in involved.

I think I know what your talking about William, it is saddening to see the problems unfold, hopefully the problems will be will be worked out and all can enjoy the holidays and put that to rest....

 

I have no idea what the subject matter is nor do I want to know. I do know that if it caused problems elsewhere I don't want to bring the discussion in here.

I am aware the purpose of the thread. Regardless, talking about situations like such do raises curiousity that can lead to the discussion of the matter. My post addressed that point with the expressed intention to ensure that the subject matter stays outside.
