Hey guys! I just got this marble shaving brush, and I love it so far! It's really beautiful and has a great weight in my opinion! Anyways, my first questions is can I use the steam method to remove this old knot?! Gonna get a new badger knot for it!
Well, steaming in theory should work, with the exception of what type of adhesive is used to secure the original knot. If it is higher temperature epoxy you can steam it all day and it will not release. If it is glue or lower temp epoxy steam should remove it. The only other issue is whether there is a micro crack in the marble that will crack further under steam. You can also get a Dremel and a Dremel drill bit and a carbide bit to open up the center and then use a small sanding wheel to remove the rest of the old knot.
Thanks guys I went ahead and just drilled out the knot! However there's a a huge bump right where the knots supposed to go and it's a marble bump haha! So I need to flatten that!
Unless he is using a knot that is longer overall than the original, and that could cause problems in fit check. Before you flatten, check the depth and compare to the knot. If the loft is a proper length, then as Luteplayers stated, the bump should stay and the knot fitted on top. Measure at least twice before making a hard grind inside the marble base.
Thanks for the tips guys! I took it to my pops and he helped me flatten the bump. I forgot what material he said it was, but he said it was used on surfboards. Anyways, I almost know for a fact that a new knot would not fit with that bump there. We had to flatten it out. I just ordered a 22mm super badger from TGN! Should be here later this week!
Can you measure the loft? If you have a ruler with mm or cm measure you should be able to provide a measurement from the very top of the handle to ends of the tips. That would allow us to have a better frame of reference to provide an answer.
OK, so the loft is 55 mm (5.5 cm = 55mm). That measurement can be somewhat floppy depending upon the knot. Super badgers are known to be soft, somewhat spongy in the opinion of many users. If this is going to be a bowl lathering or paint stroke brush, you will be in luxury with this setting. Don't expect any scritch from this knot. If you want a little firmer backbone then slightly increase the holes depth so that the loft will be around 52 mm. You will not gain a lot more setting it lower than that. A best or finest knot would provide more backbone even at the 55 mm setting than Super. Now as to looks, it looks great as is. So you can proceed, or do a little tweaking, but don't work too much harder on it because it the returns of the work will be diminishing. Good fortune and enjoy!
I like nice weighted brushes too! Everyone else here has more knowledge than I about a knot replacement tho.
