Too many variables to give sound advice.
Can you give a more thorough description as to what you mean by 'not getting a good shave'?

    • is the razor tugging or pulling?
    • are you getting razor rash?
    • how many passes? did you just do one area or try the whole face?
    • was the razor honed beforehand? By whom?
    • was it stropped pre-shave?
    • Your pre-shave protocol (pre-shave oil? face-soak?)

It may not be the strop alone being the issue.

Still a little hard to answer. It could be the strop. It could also be the honing job, the quality of the razor, the way you're holding it, the inclination of the earth, the proximity of the Hale-Bopp comet... You get the picture? One way to determine if it's the razor or the technique is to use a disposable blade holder, like a shavette. It's inexpensive to get, and the blades don't need stropping. There are definite differences in the experience, but you use essentially the same angles for the shave. If you cen get a good shave with one of them, then the problem is coming from your razor and you can move on to troubleshooting there. THe best way to do that is to send it to someone like Larry at Whipped Dog, or Glen (gssixgun) right here, and have them go over it for you. Using a razor isn't too tough to learn, it just takes time and patience. Restoring a razor is much harder to do, and takes a lot of practice.

Be careful when stropping.Make sure you are not lifting the spine as this can cause the razor to dull quickly. Also the scales on the razor do not align properly and if they make contact with the blade, the micro fin will become damaged which will essentially dull the edge.

You do realize that it may take many more shaves with a straight razor before you get any results that resemble a good DE shave? I've been at it pretty diligently with a straight for about six months now, easily 3-4 shaves a week with a straight, and I am just NOW beginning to feel comfortable using one and getting results that rival my good DE shaves. It takes time, patience and dedication.

Make sure to practice. I know when I started it took awhile to bet a full bbs shave. Make sure your prep is good. Use a good quality soap and lather your face really well.

Patience is very important when using a straight.

Great point. I have been shaving with a straight for 3 years and i can say the first 100 shaves were pretty rough.
