Hi everyone! My name is Ted, or Teddly, or whatever you really feel like calling me :D

As this is a shaving forum, i'll throw in my shaving history as well as my name!

My first shaving experience was a Norelco electric I got for Christmas one year... the whole yank and pull thing is no fun for anyone... but it's an especially bad system for peach fuzz I think! Because it was like a slightly more painful wax job that didn't last very long I never found myself shaving very often with my Norelco, unless it was some special day or my face was just getting too gross.

After about 2 years with the norelco and an often scruffy face I happened to end up with a Gilette Fusion. Cool! I thought, it's the newest and the greatest! It should be awesome! I'd never used a real razor before (or at least what I thought of as real at the time) and had no idea what I was doing... but I threw the Fusion brand can goo on my face and just shaved until my face was smooth. Amazing! The closest shave I'd ever had! I was so proud, my girlfriend would love my new close shave!....... until a couple hours later when my neck looked like i had bad acne underneath a sunburn! I've always gotten nasty ingrown hair with my fusion, and so again have been at an off and on shaving rate, only shaving when I felt I needed to (date, beyond scruffy, etc.)

Then, somehow, I came across Mantic59's video's on youtube, and Leisureguy's blog, and discovered that contrary to my dad's claim, "If you shaved every day your face would get used to it!", there was a better way... that was just last week or so and I was pretty darned excited. I shaved a couple days in a row with the fusion so I would be able to compare when I started upgrading my setup. First day with fusion went fine... second day I had ingrown hairs which created bumps that got shaved off which make some nice bloody spots all over my neck... I was VERY ready to move on!

So just this morning I went to the local mall where there is a C&E store, and picked up a Best Badger Brush (Which I think they somehow way overcharged me for... because the brush ($35 online?) and the little 6 dollar stand I bought came up to be around 70 bucks  there was an Art of Shaving store right next to the C&E, but I didn't want to invest in a 30+ dollar cream just yet, so I ran over to the cutlery store, Excalibur, to see what they had. Amazingly they had a nice selection of Merkur razors, and some Col. Conk shave soap. I really want to try the 38c, and they didn't have it, so I just grabbed the soap instead and went to target. At target I grabbed some Nivia for Men Face Soap and Nivia for Men aftershave balm. I got the sensitive skin balm cause I didn't want any alcohol or menthol. Then I headed home.

So today I lathered up for the first time with a brush and some Col. Conk amber soap, and used the single blade on the back side of my fusion (I am SO tired of 5 blade destruction) and had THE MOST ENJOYABLE SHAVE... wait... the ONLY enjoyable shave I have ever had. As I sit here now at 3 in the morning (so I don't sleep much...) I have no irritation and no hairs growing out in places they shouldn't be, which is very unusual for me 12+ hours after a shave.

Soooo I figured you guys seem to know what you're talking about with the brush... I guess you're probably right about the DE razor deal too. So I just ordered my 38c, now I just have to wait for it to get here... hopefully it won't take too long :(

But now that you've read my life story, here I am, pleased to meet all of you and hope to have some wonderful conversations with you in the future!

    I can't wait to learn :)

Welcome to TSD, Teddly ! ::

    Great to have you here.
Please be careful with the 38c, as it is very heavy and can be very aggressive.
Be on the lookout for an old Gillette SuperSpeed (1940-1950's era) as they are very mild yet very efficient shavers; I know you would be happy with a SS in your shavery.

I'm with rick. Of course those who have seen me around these parts know that I am nuts about the Gillette Super Speed. In my mind the Super Speed is the greatest thing ever invented. I have tried the 38c and found it to be ok, not anywhere as good as the Super Speeds are but still pretty darn good.

My shave history makes you look like a brain. I stuck with those terrible mini lawn mowers for twenty-five years and never got a good shave out of them ever. At least you got out after a year.

And no your pop is wrong, my father tried to make the same claim. YOUR FACE WILL NOT GET USED TO THE BLADE.

I have heard a lot about the Conk soaps, I like my soaps to fit in a bowl and I am just to darn lazy to heat a cake in the microwave and pour it into a bowl.

Welcome to The Shave Den, Ted!

I can't figure out what happened to you at the C&E store. On their website brushes start at $35, then jump to $65. So yeah something odd went on there.

Mantic :Sweet, now I'm on the same forum as Wet Shavings first viral celebrity!:

rick: Thanks for the warning. I probably should've started out with a HD and accessorized out from there, but I'm sort of a sucker for having something different... which sounds silly since having a DE razor at all is already quite different.. but, as an example, I ride a Triumph Speed Four. I have only seen one other speed four on the road ever :D

Queen: Well, looking at the web site I can see what happened. I thought Mantic said the Best Badger Brush was the 35 dollar one, not the Pure Badger, so I asked the lady at the store for a Best Badger and that's what I got! But, since I'm enjoying the brush whether I end up liking my DE or not, I don't think the extra 30 dollar investment will hurt me any

Et al: Thank you so much for the warm welcome! I couldn't believe I already had 14 people reply to my hello by the time I woke up this morning! Again, I look forward to learning from all of you :)

EDIT: Doh! I looked at the C&E site again... I paid 30 bucks for the pretty black one, not for the better bristles :ashamed001

Oh well, I like it and I wanted to set up my bathroom so all the stuff on my counter was black and silver to accent my white counter top. And it sure is prettier than the cream colored hehe ::
