Hey everybody, just wanted to give a shout out from the Great White North. Been wet shaving for some time but recently journeyed into the world of straight razors (maybe a year ago). All the usual ADs including soap, razors, AS and brushes. My most regular rig for leisurely shaving is a Shavemac 227, Institut Karite soap, a Thiers Issard 6/8" stropped on a Tony Miller strop and finished with L'Occitane ASB. For time compression substitute a Merkur 38C razor. Anyway, always ready to discuss the relative merits of brushes, soaps, razors, aftershaves and all things shaving. Shaving is something I enjoy when I take the time to do it right and I try to always take the time. Ken
Welcome, Ken. One of these days - if I can figure out how to sharpen the things - I plan to give str8's a try. Enjoy your new BK12 and let us know how you like it! If you don't enjoy the shave...you could always use it to wash your car! :rofl
Hi Ken and welcome to The Shave Den. I'm quietly lurking on the straight forums, trying to learn a bit about them. I think I want to give one a try at some point, myself.
Welcome Ken, it's great to have you here. Many of us are dreaming about trying the straights but havn't done so yet, until then we'll be DE handicapped.
Thanks guys, great place here! Straights aren't that bad, really! The first few shaves are "Am I gonna cut my nose off?" scary but it comes pretty quickly. Beware, your first "real" cut will come AFTER you think you've "got it" (at least mine did). Until then (and AFTER the first cut) you go slow, easy and careful. Then, one day, you don't.... And I don't think of straights as better or worse, just different than DEs. I get a great shave from my 38C too. It's just another of those things you do just because you want to. They require more focus and more skill and with all the honing and stropping, a lot more effort but you get this sense of mastering a craft as opposed to performing a task. And of course you get a whole new list of ADs. Strops, hones, straights.... If you want something REALLY scary, try a Feather AC. That thing left a touch cut on my face when it was still sitting in the cabinet:ashamed001 I'm sure the BLK12 won't get anywhere near my car. Big is GOOD! I may need to find a bucket to keep the soap in though Can't wait to see how this compares to my Shavemac XXL. Ken
Hey there neighbor, welcome to the den. I was just up at Beachwood mall, they had a sale on Cade Soap, had to pass, but was attractively priced. Steve
Welcome to The Shave Den, Ken! Wait a sec......we already have a Ken. Do we need another? Oh wait that's a silly question to ask around here, huh? :rofl
Hey Steve, Do you remember how long it runs?? I'll be over that way tomorrow. I may stop in... Wish AOS across the hall would do that. Nice to meet you. Ken
Greetings Ken. Although I use a double edge I can understand why others use a straight, you need not buy anything more, among the reasons. Right at this point I am getting my double edge blades so darn cheap there is no real reason for me to switch. I have approximatly 90 blades in the cabinet which I got free from Razor and Brush. I guess if I ever did switch over it would becuase of the challenge behind it, taking the hill because the hill is there or to save my son dollars in the future.
