I posted a while ago in the shavers and side arms thread about my American world war one model 1917 accompanied by the shave kit from wwi that I use almost daily. Well, I acquired a German wwi rifle now.. made in 1916 model Gewehr 1898 Mauser...I have a 1914 1898 model bayonet for it..And an 1898/05 butchers blade bayonet in the mail on the way to me.... But I want a shaving kit as well! ! Anyone know what I'm looking for?
Great looking rifle big fan. I am honestly not sure, I have a vintage German open comb that that I picked up from Krona, never crossed my mind to ask info on it. Ill take a better picture a bit later. Looks very similar to some of the older Gillette models which might be an indicator of the time.
I'm 5'7" and their combined height is a couple inches taller than I am. It's odd that I can find tons of info on the American wwi kits but not much about German at all! Does the shaver have a logo?
Here are some better pics, ignore the disney stuff putting the little one to bed.... First picture has the made in germany and some sort of mark.
There were German lather catchers that used wedge blades and there were German knockoffs of the early Gillettes but I don't think they cranked them out and gave them to the troops like we did. Most WWI solders probably had straights.
Well, that was a pretty big innovation at the time. I understand the Germans cranked out the copies of the Gillette Old-type like above after WWII. Not sure I could find any documentation of that though.
I just found an Optimo 4-piece open comb safety razor at an antique shop. Made in Germany, I think 20's -30's.
They simply ordered ze viskers to schtop growink. My guess would be for a straight razor of some sort. Solingen, no doubt.
The later Mausers have a metal tube there that's used to disassemble the bolt for cleaning. Not sure if that plate is used for the same thing on the older ones.
It's a hole in the stock for disassembling the bolt. You press the firing pin into the hole to compress the spring in the bolt.
