J.B.F. Champlin 6/8 half hollow. Day 2 and another very minimal "Shave Test" finished off with a DE, but I'm starting to get a sense of the attraction here fellas!
Does anyone else feel the desire to pick up some more straights after coming to this thread? George Wostenholm Celebrated I.XL
Sure, but generally I come away with a feeling as if I'm bringing mangy mutts to a Westminster Club Dog show….
You've got some very nice looking "mangy mutts", but I know how you feel. I'd just like to have a little more variety.
I like to think I'll get some nice variety in my straights one day. Right now I'm working on learning what I need to look for.
Speaking of 'mangy mutts,' here is what I used this morning: a Frederick Reynolds big ol' frame back. This photo was taken before I sent it to Glen to fix the edge. It was, according to Glen, one the the biggest challenges to bevel set he's had in recent memory. Someone along the way had bread knifed the face and probably used an electric knife sharpener on it… This 'not recommended' process removed the blades's original smile, and presented a challenge to fix. Glen finally got the bevel to 'pop,' but it took, I was told, over a dozen attempts. I love the way this razor now feels. Being that it has become a legitimate shaving tool, next up is to refinish the worn scales.
What's your plan for the scales Kevin? Have you done the neat's foot oil bath yet? They might not require much more, they look pretty sound on the visible side.
Not yet on the neats foot bath, but that's the next step once I begin in earnest on this razor. The scales are pretty solid except for that crack you can see on the wedge end near the pin. It doesn't go all the way through so the set may indeed be salvageable.
Boker "Good as Gold" 5/8 And that's my rotation - a Garland, a Champlin and a Boker. More than enough to learn on I think.
Well I couldn't pick which razor to use this morning, so I used both. Celebrated for WTG and CANUCK for XTG.
Debut of my first C-Mon this morning….and it was a good one! …although I truly didn't need a shave this morning as late last night, I had my first opportunity to try out my recently-restored Wade & Butcher. Great shaver!
Garland Cutlery Co. "The Improved Eagle" 5/8. A second comfortable (partial) shave with the Garland this morning.
