Seems to me like there's more than just a little over-compensating going on in regards to the popularity of the R41. Reading the various forum threads on the subject, more often than not I'm reminded of those pseudo monster-truck-like toys that are so popular with a certain segment of the 'merican population.
Chris, I venture to guess theses' some truth to your observations regarding the aura around the R41.I don't doubt the same rational applies to the appeal of the larger-bladed straight razors on ebay. Example: a 5/8 or 6/8 w&b straight will go for $50-60; but one 7/8 or larger? $300 & up, sometimes….. no matter the condition.
I use R41 model 2011 only when i have 3 days beard Quality blade and caution,a lot of caution ! Model 2013 (head) is on it's way.
I like them both, with a slight bias towards the 2011 model. Both razors will get you close! Απολαύστε δύο απ 'αυτούς, ο φίλος μου!
I have both models and prefer the 2011. I took some time to master but now I get great shaves without blood or irritation. The 2011 is very picky about blades so try different blades until you find the one that works for you.
I have not tried a razor as aggressive as the 2011 R41; with the newer R41, the closest I've found in both feel and results is the Barbasol Floating Head (shown below). The vintage Gillette OCs are considerably tamer.
The most aggressive razor I have tried is a progress set on 5 and a slim handle on 9 my thought is more aggressive less passes less neck irritation oddly enough my '46 aristocrat with a vidyut super-max platinum gives my most comfortable shave I am trying to find the blade gap for the aristocrat so I can duplicate with my adjustable s. Any thoughts?
I really enjoy my The 2013 version. I use it with a feather blade for a really close, comfortable shave. Although I do respect this razor and I am always very careful when using it, but I never have cut myself with it.☺
It is difficult to gauge adjustables as the variance is great between models. A vintage Fat Boy dialed wide open is fairly aggressive by vintage standards, but is still quite comfortable. A wide-open Futur has such ridiculous blade exposure that I considered it unwise for me to use it at that setting.
I'm one of those who happen to think the slants are VERY efficient razors, but comfortable enough that even beginners with decent technique can use effectively. If you've never tried a slant bar razor, I think every DE shaver owes themselves the opportunity to see what the 'fuss' is all about. Not everyone cares for them, but plenty of folks do. If you buy one to try, and you find its not for you, the resale market value on them is quite good.
So is the r41 a good one? Because a vintage slant from Germany is to much money just to try. Take care.
I've never thought about trying a slant, but since you put it that way ~guess I'll start looking to pick one up.
