I have been going through my sample pack of blades which consist of Perssonna(red)Platinum, Derby, Astra SP, Crystal and a 5 pack of Lab Blue I purchased. So far the Derby has given me the closest shave with my MicroTouch DE. Lab Blue a very close 2nd. The Perrsonna Red was not good 2 bad shaves and was hash to me. Tried the first with the Astra SP today very smooth but not a close shave today. Will see what the next one brings. If I get 2 good shaves I go for a 3rd with the same blade a then move on to the next sample.

Is it common for a for a Derby blade and a mild razor to end up being the best combo?

From what I read the Derby's have reputation for not being very sharp. Has anyone had any good experiences with the Derby's do they hold up well?

Personally, Derbys are one of the worst blades I have ever used, but then what is bad for me might be great for you. Blades are probably the most subjective thing in shaving. Good luck in your search for your perfect blade.:)
Hopefully someone else whos has better experience with a Derby can give you some more insight-

Don't listen to what anyone tells you about what blades are best and which ones are garbage. Let your face tell you.

All blades are sharp. Find some that work for you and go with it.

I have found Derby's to be perfectly acceptable in both my Feather Popular and my 37c. Not the best blades I've ever used, but nothing wrong with them or the shave I get from them either.

    +1

Derbys work well for me in the Fatip, Merkur Slant, and are quite acceptable in the Merkur 30C.
(used the 30C with a Derby just this morning. mmmm Good! :D)
I wouldn't trash the blades that don't seem to work well right now.
As you gain experience, and find your favorite razor, many of the "bad" blades may be just fine.

The ones you've mentioned are basically all equal in quality. My suggestion is that at their price... Use them for only one shave and then bin.

Most people seem to not like Derbys, but it's all about you. Just keep experimenting and find what works best for you.

I am new to wet shaving as well and, to my surprise, have been finding that most blades do feel differently and wear differently. So many factors come into play, so like many have stated, it is very personal. To date, I am really liking the Astra SP but that is just me and my very little experience. Good luck!

  13. Astra SPs are great for a close comfortable shave.

I agree but aim still looking around for a good sampler pack to try a few more brands. Amazon sells a "premium sample mix" for about $20 for 40 blades (Feather, Pol Silver, etc).
