Hi all. I've been looking around here for awhile and I plan on ordering some shaving gear soon. So far I think I'm going to order a Parker 99r and a black badger brush from Trinity Shaving. Are those decent choices for starting out? I was also wondering what the difference is between shaving cream and shaving soap. Can't wait to get started.
I think it sounds like you're of to a good start. What brand is the black badger brush? A shave soap is generally a hard puck of soap that you have to swirl your brush on to load. Cream comes in tubs or tubes and is either squeezed into your shaving bowl or the tips of your brush are supported into the cream to load it. I'm a soap guy myself.
to TSD "steven1985" Your choices sound as good as any. In my experience it's not about the razor or blade, brush or soap or even technique, but rather about how the combination of those things work together on your face... The only way to "REALY" know if something works for you is to try it...
Sounds like a good starting point, but you haven't mentioned blades. There is no objective best blade. Everyone reacts differently to different brands, so I recommend ordering a sampler pack of different brands.
sounds like you have done some research. sounds good. remember to go slow, no pressure, and listen to your razor. gary's thirty day rule works, follow his advice. welcome to the den. report your progress on the shave of the day thread.
Welcome Steven. Although I've not used one myself, I've heard the 99r is a good razor for someone new to DE shaving. As for creams or soaps, I prefer creams. I started on Proraso green and it's still one of my favorites. Just started with some RazorRock soap recently and still getting used to the "method". Have fun with it!
Welcome to the Den! I think your opening choices are good ones. My advice would be to watch Mantic59's videos on YouTube or on his sharpologist website. Fantastic for learning technique. Also, I would strongly support getting a blade sampler. In terms of soaps and creams, you'll likely end up exploring both. I prefer soaps (croaps actually), but creams are generally easier to learn how to lather IMHO.
As you see, there is a lot of individual preference in this pursuit. So I agree that you should try different products; a variety of creams, soaps, blades, etc, before drawing any conclusions about what is best for you.
