Hey guys, I've been reading The Shave Den for a couple months now since I got my Parker SR1 Shavette and have been shaving with it for about 3 months now. I decided to make the jump to straight razor and recently bought a J.S. Holler & Co. Germany - Adolph Blaich San Francisco - 5/8 Straight Razor & a Magnetic Cutlery Co. #55 straight razor from eBay. They are scheduled to arrive at my home on Thursday so I am pretty excited. What do you guys know about these straights? Happy to be a part of this community! On the razor stamped Magnetic you have what is called a "frown" which is far less common than the opposite which is of course a "smile". This is not too hard to fix but you will not be able to shave with it until this is fixed - expect to pay $30-$35 to have that work done but it will come back shave ready and very sharp. The other one is probably the better razor and it appears to be in nice condition as well. To sharpen a SR blade you will need to buy at least 4 whet stones and learn the art from any of several Youtube segments on the subject. Whetstones needed are 1K, 4K, 8K and 12K grit plus a good strop. If you do not have a strop yet I suggest one selling on ebay that has either horse hide on it or bridle leather mounted on a paddle. These work better in my view. Good luck!
Welcome to the Den. We know you'll fit right in. So grab yourself a comfy chair, and give our threads a spin! Burma Shave
Welcome to the Shave Den. Glad to have you with us. Lots of friendly shavers here willing to help. You'll learn a lot here.
I have low cost razor handles for replacement purposes listed on ebay in black. If you send a razor out to be sharpened with a replacement handle then it will come back all ready to rock and roll. Let us know if you want a referral for someone to do this work. This handle is the least expensive one on ebay as far as I know. Look for it under "straight razor replacement handle"
Man that San Francisco is beautiful!!! If you decide you don't like it let me know. My wife is from there. It may help my case to try a straight razor. Hahahaha -Chuck
Man, I'm from San Francisco, that's why I HAD to buy that one lol. I'm praying I can give it new life and get it back to service!
