I am not plugging this, I do not have any vested interest (financial or otherwise) in this razor or this company. It's just something I came across that would likely be of interest to some people here. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1358607332/rockwell-razors-shaving-reinvented?ref=nav_search
So it's a razor that comes with 3 reversible base plates for a possibility of 6 "settings"? I'll pass. Good luck to them though.
I think flipping the baseplate to vary aggressiveness is cute. I like innovative people. I wish the real product looked as nice as the 3D models.
Now fellas!... Don't start rumors. Those enterprising gents said they planned on making it from 100% stainless. They seem genuine and I prefer to take them at their word. I really like the thought they have put into their approach. I want one of these but doubt I will collect the change to buy one in the next 25 days. However, I have two thoughts about this razor: 1. They have settled on blade gap as their selling point. It appeals to me. I would really like to test it. However, I just have to wonder how they picked the "perfect" blade exposure. 2. a) I am not sure the flippable blades will stand up to user habits in the long run. I suspect that, like most adjustables, people will pick a plate and "set it and forget it." How well will Johnny Shaver keep up with the other plates after that? Wouldn't he just put them in the drawer? b) Maybe the real target is Johnny Shaver-Hobbyist. He's certainly a bird of a different feather! That guy could probably keep up with the different plates, but would flipping plates be as exciting as switching razors for heavy growth days? Maybe like @BigMark said, flipping plates is just too much work. @J_Man I could use a better angle on the pic, but I think the bulk might be well under the cap. The base plates look extra thick, but I think it is to give sufficient material for the double-duty geometry. I could sure use an end view, but you made a good call on potential bulk issues! I want one of these razors just to test their blade gap approach! After the fun of testing, though, it would all depend on the shave. Oh, RAD, why do your torment me beyond my means?... I'm gonna go home and turn over the couch cushions. After that, maybe I can find where I stored my lemonade stand.
It's great that new DE razors are being developed. It may be a sign that the Wet Shavers movement is making a difference. Let's hope the trend continues.
mmmmm I'm so tempted to give this a shot, it COULD be really good IE: My use scenario would be use one plate most of the time and when several too many days of growth are present (happens sometimes), I switch plates and get stuck in. I have a Fatboy and a slim so I don't NEED one of these but ...................... Yes I do, I need it.
Very interesting, but doesn't ATT offer the same thing already although with less blade gap choices and at a "MUCH" higher price. The ATT razor does offers two handles however as well as both Solid and OC base plates and IMO the ATT razor is "MORE" attractive!?! I have to agree this razor seems like nothing more than a cumbersome adjustable. I also believe that for most shavers once you find an adjustment that suits you, there will be no need for all the "extra" pieces or a desire to constantly change heads. If on the other hand constantly making adjustments to your safety razor, especially during a shave, is a feature that you like, need or want, I feel you'd be better served with a Gillette or Merkur. The ad also fails to mention one of the BIG reasons IMO to get a 3 piece razor which is handle changeability. Can I use one of my Cadet, Sabi T2, Weber BullDog, Greistshaving or Durham Delux DE handles with these heads? I can tell you just from looking at this handle in the ad I won't like it(as it's too skinny, too light and too long) IMO it also looks kind of cheap. I'd say a better way for this company to go would be to offer just the heads(with a cap stud thread size of 10/32) sans handle for sale. I think that would be of interest to more people, be much more affordable and keep the shaver from purchasing a "BUNCH" of extra gear he doesn't really need! [EDIT] I just went back and reread through the Rockwell ad more carefully and they do specifically mention handle interchangeability. So sorry Rockwell I stand corrected there. That plus the fact that unless the Rockwell is really poorly made the current asking price makes it a very attractive buy. I still think they should offer to sell the heads separately with or without the handle.
Those are my thoughts on this as well. 1) shaving is so YMMV, I'm dubious over this type of system. Is it just a random range? Is it a situation where I can use all 6 gaps? Or is it.... 2) A. Where I find one that works and there you go. I think this is the biggest drawback. I think it's a novel concept, but at the end of the day I think most users will pretty much use that one plate and call it good. B. I think for the hobbyist, this will just be another collectable item that is used sparsely and forgotten. Like you say, I'd rather use a different razor for different situations, not the same razor always. I think we are in an interesting time where people aren't necessarily asking should they do something, but doing it because they can. I think this razor is just one more symptom of that. So many things get funded and then fail that would never have made it to market in the first place traditionally. I see this as one of those.
I have no problem with zamak [pot metal] razors. I own several and love them. And they have held up very well over the years. The pot metal thing is actually just a joke between Mrshaverman and I.
