Hello I've been using an Edwin Jagger DE razor for some time and would like start using a straight razor. I would like learn the stropping and honing processes. Budget is unfortunately a requirement so blade over the ornateness is where I'd like the money to go. Anybody have a suggestion where and what I should look? Thanks
Welcome to TSD! I would suggest for starters to look at either Gemstarcustoms.com or Whipped Dog.com. Both offer straight razors that are actually usable, unlike many one finds on ebay, antique stores or Craigslist. As to what type: 4/8 or 5/8 blade width, round tip (not square tip), carbon steel blade, ideally 'shave ready'—a very loosely-used term but if accurate, it implies what it states. I recommend focusing on just learning to use a straight razor and how to strop it. Down the road (six months, at least, or longer), you can always venture into honing. No need to overcomplicate a process that will already require your patience, determination and a longer learning curve than with a SE or DE razor.
Don't cut your throat! Seriously; ease into it. Start by just shaving your cheeks for a period of time until you get the feel of it. Gradually move to other areas of your face. Keep a sharp edge on your straight. 30 degree's!! YES WHIPPED DOG great place to start.
It is less frightening than you might think once you start. I did what daddyo said - I would just do the easy parts and finish with a DE. It did not take long to get over the gitters. I am now on my 258th SR shave without a DE. Still learning too I might add
