Lovely shave early this morn with the other C-Mon I honed recently. The hammered tang (as well as the blade shape) on this C-Mon is very similar to the Beau Brummel—which reveals the relationship between these models (& the Dubl Ducks). All the same importer (PJM?). I know theres some common ground to all these makes; its just difficult to pin down the details...

Many of those models: Dubl Ducks, Ottos, etc., it seems, are not immune to that bane of collectors: cell rot…..
That evident scale rot in the photo above is the difference between a potentially $300 razor and a $19 one….
It kills me every time I see an Otto Deutsch for sale because I know before even looking at it it has about a 60% chance of being a cell rot victim. And I would LOVE to have a nice one...that green just floats my boat! Kevin, I think your price estimates for a good one and a bad one are about spot on. I'd pay 20 bucks for the inlays if I needed them, and a minty OD Hans is very much worth the 300 bucks these days, though it is a scary prospect as these babies seem to be more affected by cell rot than even Dubl Duck Cracked Ice. Light, heat, humidity, exposure to water...there are a number of factors that will provide the activation energy required for the cell rot decomposition reaction to begin. Once it starts, it's fast, and there is simply no stopping it. Like pulling the trigger on a gun, once the hammer drops, it's bad news. That's a bummer when it's a $300 razor. I digress. A friend of mine picked up this dandy J. Wostenholm EBRO at a Mennonite thrift shop. That reminds me, I owe her five bucks. It cleaned up sufficiently with only Maas, but did have a NASTY twist in it's spine. Odd it seems since the hone wear was very uniform and normal, almost like it had become twisted after the owner was no longer honing it...
I always wondered about how one would or could go about extending the life of those rotting scales, or best case, to do some preventative measure to forestall the inevitable. This would become of greater concern, of course, if I ever came across a pristine Deutsch. Disassembly of the scales and perhaps several applications of sealer?—seems too easy and I've read enough of comments by restorers who state as you do, Mike, that once it starts, all bets are off on the life of those scales. Re: the Wostenholm. For $5, I'd say you did alright. interesting about the twist. Are the scales still parallel, or are they skewed as well?
