Edit: Pic/discussion thread for this now open! http://theshaveden.com/forums/threa...ay-rule-pic-discussion-all-are-welcome.42165/ Anybody new or with a new razor who is interested in doing a 30 day rule together? I am planning on doing 30 days with a Slim Adjustable in January 2015 and would love some company. We can be as strict or as loose with the guidelines as feels right, and would love to gauge interest in this. Hope there are a taker or two.. Chris
@fimpster @TrentRTR I wasn't supposed to post the invite to the NGA thread. I thoughtlessly posted without heeding the no chatter guideline. I love razors and get excited sometimes. Let's discuss it here and see what comes of it.
Great...you and I are enough to get started...as January approaches hopefully a couple more will join in.
Inviting @GDCarrington to drop in and visit with us throughout the month...he introduced me to the idea of a 30 day rule.
I will be watching this thread to see what comes from the individual and collective journey of the 30 day rule.
I have found over a long period of time when your technique becomes strong enough multiple number of grail shaves can be had with differing price levels of products. Solid technique and knowledge makes even the lowliest of products (not defective products) become grail products. If you go away learning one thing you should know the three Ts which stands for "Technique Trumps Tools." Now I mention defective products, no amount of technique can overcome a defective product. The products must be ones that can work correctly. No out of alignment razors, or poorly manufactured blades that have bad edges, can be overcome by technique. Here is the advice I received when I started with a DE and so I freely give it to new users. The most important things in shaving are, your skin and technique. All other things fall in line behind those two things and to support them. Since the skin is a given fixed item, the next major item is technique. It is called THE 30 DAY RULE. THE 30 DAY RULE is as follows: Find a razor, then a blade that will not cause issues with your skin (that may take a few different blades in a sampler pack to find a suitable choice or it maybe the first out of the gate) and select a soap or cream that is easy to generate good lather. Once you find those, and it may take a couple of weeks to find this combination, order a quantity of that blade, enough for 30 days, and then spend 30 days using nothing else until you build up your technique. (Note that only one brand blade is used for 30 days after each blade in the sampler pack is tested to make the decision on the blade brand to use for 30 days.) The 30 day clock starts when you have the right blade for you. After 30 days, change one and only one variable and work for another week then change another after another week. At that point you should be able to make better decisions because your technique is now in place. This will help you to avoid buying too much gear and stuff too soon without having the technique available to enjoy all the gear.
This is how I started getting serious about DE shaving. Since I want to learn a Slim Adjustable...I will use Voskhod for the month...still pondering my soap choice. My interpretation of the 30 day exercise is one razor, one blade type, and one soap for a month. I am excited about doing this again! Seems I have read posts that indicate @Spit_Fire and @Jostalli might be doing 30 day rules soon....the more the merrier!
Sounds like a good way to learn something and have some fun along the way. Why not. I have a couple of recent vintage acquisitions that I'm dying to give a try anyway so I'll pick between them. Either the 1918 Ball End or the 1930 NEW (head is New, handle is Contract Tech). Astra SP blades, Proraso Green soap. If anyone wants to suggest which of the two razors I'm all ears. Otherwise I'll toss a coin.
Either razor would work! Pick the one you want to master first. Welcome aboard. Proraso is also perfect choice for this, IMHO. That's 4 people...
I have to be out. No new razors or blades and none on the horizon. Still, an interesting thread to follow.
I was thinking....March 24th the EverReady 1914 will have it's 101st birthday...maybe March would be a good time to do 30 days with the EverReady 1914 'Little Lather Cather'....in honor or this great razor on it's birthday month.... Any Takers.....? Anyone who doesn't have one will have time to cop...I believe everyone should have at least one of this charming little works of functional Art...
