I wanted a super speed to compare to MTO. I don't believe it has any date code on the head.

 

I as about to ask what the date code is under the head. Here is a '47 Super speed. Twist knob has horizontal lines and is knurled. This is an early '47. Prior to July.

 

Could be some of those don't have dates either.

I think they are supposed to be about the same shave though.

 

That's a '47-54 Super speed. Can't tell exactly with the head closed. They notched the post in July 1947 and after, and added date codes in 1950. "V" was the 1950 code. The flair tip started in 1954.

 

Mine has the v for the blade dispenser, so is the later one.

 

I don't think the razor itself was really different from early 47 through the end of the '40s style. For that matter a '50s SS shaves very similar to a '40s. I have a '59 and other than the handle I can't really tell a difference between the two when using them. Both fine examples of Gillette quality.

A true Plisson setup! What dates are you running your rule? What are your personal objectives for the exercise?

My understanding is that mine is impossible to precisely date, and is an SS of some variant from 1947-9. I got it from a forum member here, so happy with it regardless of exact date. I asked him to pick out a mechanically sound razor for a possible restore. He delivered just what I asked for, as I had just told him I needed one from around 1949.

 

Sorry Bama but the nickle plated razor in this photo is a flare tip. 1954-66. It will have a date code on it. Letter Z-L.

Edit: This does nothing to take away the coolness of it at all. The flare tips are awesome.

 

Ok. There is no letter code on the underside of the head that I can find. I have a slim and a tech that both have them. That is my confusion. I need to call it what it is...any help is appreciated.

 

Did you clean the soap gunk off of it? I am looking at my two flare tips. The '54 doesn't have the same knurling as yours, but the '63 does. The date codes should be in pretty much the same spot as your tech, not your slim. It should be just southwest of the R in REG.US

 

Mystery solved! It's "k" hiding in plain sight. I don't know how I missed it, I bought it and threw it in my razor vault. Too busy doing thirty day rules. Thank you.

Extra odd! an X would put it in 1952 or 1977. Flare tips weren't made in either year. Maybe you have a Frankenrazor?

Caught it. The quarter will be in pretty much the same spot on the opposite side. It's turning 50 soon

 

This week. K1! Pretty cool actually that is almost 2015.

 

I've got most of my set-up ready. I've got only to decide on the blades and AS (if AS has to be a 30 days constant). We're at my in-laws at the moment and will stay until Friday and this is what I brought with me. And some different brands of blades - yet to choose.

Weapons of choice:

• Razor: birth year & quarter Gillette Slim
• Brush: TGN a grade silvertip badger on Oscar11 handle
• Soap: Cella!
• AS: Floyd AS splash or Floyd AS balm (leaning toward the splash)

 

So I think that's really awesome. Using it for 30 days for it's 50th Birthday!


Also what we haven't been talking about is how awesome that aristocrat from your earlier picture looks.

 

My brush will be in today. I plan use a few different blades the next several days. I have local family owned drugstore it turns out that carries a few brands of blades wilkinson swords classic being one of them. So plan to sample about 4 different blades so I should be ready by about the 5th or so.
