    My objectives are as follows:
    1) To master the ATT S1 razor. I don't have the angle totally honed in on my XTG and ATG passes.
    2) To be able to use the ATT S1 to reliably get a 2 pass DFS to BBS with minimal touch ups and irritation.
    3) To master lathering a harder soap like Cade (my usual soaps are actually croaps) so that I can try some of the other harder soaps with confidence - particularly MdC.
    4) To enjoy my new hardware

    December 30 - 30 day start! SOTD

Prep: Warm wash and Cornhusker's Lotion
    Lather: Klar's Kabinett
    Brush: Vie-Long 13061M horsehair
    Razor: Gillette New LC
    Blade: Voskhod Teflon (1)
Post: cold rinse and Proraso green aftershave

3 passes and my face is smooth. I am starting on my 30 days today. The only thing that I will be changing possibly during the month is the aftershave, and that would only be because I might use up the bottle before the month is out. Here is the story behind all of the components.
    • The Gillette New LC was a gift from my son for Christmas. I was at the antique store when he bought it for $8.
    • I've not given the Voskhods a sustained try in an OC razor
    • The V-L brush was the first "expensive" brush I purchased as part of a den clearance sale back early in the spring of 2014
    • The Klar's Kabinett was received as a PIF from @PanChango. Today was the 21st time I've used this soap since mid-November. Yes, I keep a google docs spreadsheet.
    • I will be using my Georgetown G12 scuttle because it is so bloody cold in my bathroom this time of year.

Hi Mike! The simplest and original idea is one brush, one soap, one razor. AS is not purely a part of this, unless that is how you choose to do your rule. Glad to see you trying a rule! :)

And we are off! Good luck with your rule!

Thank you. That is aristocrat is another restoration candidate!

Perfect! Run your rule when you are ready... Remember...can you create thirty unique pics for your rule? I assume you are doing the standard one brush, razor, and soap. Good luck!

I have the ATT S2 and H2. Great razors and pretty much the only DE razors I use anymore.
I think I'm the only goof-ball dumb enough to get slapped twice for an inappropriate avatar. LOL.

    For general consumption:

A random set of musings and suggestions.

I will be doing a 30 Day Rule with one brush, one soap, and one razor. I think I will shorthand this as (BSG) for Burma Shave Guidelines. I encourage most newer shavers to go this route, as it isolates the razor conditions and makes it easier to isolate issues. I will be learning a slim adjustable as if I were brand new.

I was thinking that those doing hybrid/adapted exercises might use (HBSG) for Hybrid Burma Shave Guidelines. This notation is probably for vet shavers with a technique issue on a razor, or a new razor to learn. Other variables like soap and brush matter much less to a very experienced shaver. Both types of exercises are very welcome and very much encouraged here.

I am going to use this notation on this thread (and pay homage to the original inspiration, "Burma Shave" GDCarrington). He changed the way I approached learning to shave DE, and greatly accelerated my happiness! So the top of my post will carry a BSG and which day I am on, and the run dates.

    My example of this:

Day 1 - Thirty Days with Slim (Jan 2-31) BSG

I suggest a header or something like this only for uniformity and clarity..anyone is free to do whatever they like.

It might be helpful for clarity for people to state their running dates, BSG or HBSG, and their objectives. The objective in starting a 30 day rule group was to gain better technique. I would like the end result to be fun as well!

I also encourage cross posting to SOTD, so let's be sure to share our fun with the whole community. Creating a unique pic every day is a way to keep the practice fresh and fun each day. 30 days is not as long as one might think though, I have had a blast doing thirty day rules before. I expect the same here on this one! This group will likely be running rules into February, and I encourage everyone to just start as they are ready. We already have a couple of guys underway. Good luck and much fun to you!

These are just suggestions...I hope everybody is just about ready...let's become technique experts in 2015! Good luck!

My declared entry into the experiment:

I will be using Slim Adjustable, TSD Lanolin Shave Sticks, and generic Personna (Kroger) and a VDH kit badger from the grocery store. I will be cold water shaving and face lathering.

My objective is to dial in the Slim, and get better at the areas of chin and jawline.

My dates will be Jan 3-February 2 under BSG (Burma Shave Guidelines).

My post on this thread on Jan 3 will look something like this:

Thirty Days with Slim (BSG 1-3 to 2-2) Day One

    image.jpg

So there we go, I am officially in. Good luck everyone!

Edit: to say starting with TSD Barber Shoppe Lanolin stick. If it were to run out, I will use the menthol version of the same make stick. I believe it to be the same soap base, but I also believe one stick will do it anyway...I am practicing two pass technique.

Just a suggestion for those participants to whom it may concern: if you're looking to tighten up your technique, may I suggest becoming your own beard map expert? For me, my shaves never improved until I learned the growth directions of my beard. Then, I knew which directions I could shave (ATG/XTG, etc.) on a certain spot of my face for the best results.

    Pardon the Interruption.

This is a good idea for shavers of all skill levels. I did this early on, and it was a big breakthrough.:)

Is the center bar notched on it? If not then it is pre 1948 for sure, probably pre-July 47. If notched then a 48-49 if there is no date code. Yes, very nice indeed.

Lather up that omega and let the lather dry on it for a night or two...it will deodorize the brush and start to split the tips. Use Arko or Proraso for this.:)

Here's mine, I just ordered 100 of the 7'oclock Yellows.

    Soap: Arko
    Blade: 7'oclock SharpEdge (yellow)
    Razor: Ball End Tech
    Brush: 24mm WD Black Badger

I'm going Jan 1 - Jan 30 under the BSG, and I'm hoping to improve my technique. So far the shaves with the tech have been great and I've finally been able to do ATG passes without excessive irritation, but I still have some neck problems and I'm hoping to clear those up.

Yep, if you do this it'll pretty much only smell like Arko from now on. :)

Cool. Will take care of that in just a bit. Thanks for the tip!

Well, Proraso in my case. I don't have any Arko which, I know, makes me at least a small heretic. :angelic007:

Well, I think I am ready. Got my brush and soap in today!!!!

    12/30

Pre - Hot Shower/Axe Chilled Cooling Facial Wash
    Razor - Parker 99R
    Blade - Wilkinson Swords Classic
Brush - Parker Rosewood Boar Brush
Soap - Proraso Eucalyptus and Menthol Soap
    Post - Cold Water Rinse

    ~BSG~
I've watched loads of youtube vids the past several weeks on wetshaving with a DE Razor. I decided to give it a go today when the Proraso and boar brush came in. I cleaned the brush with dawn and rinsed it out thoroughly and left to dry. A hour or so later I soaked the brush again in my bowl while I jumped in the shower. I have been using Axe Chilled Cooling face wash for atleast a year. Its a great product. Once out I shaked off my brush and opened the Proraso for the first time. Quickly got a nice consistency going, then to the bowl and it quickly made a huge amount of lather. Wet my face again with warm water and then applied with brush. I immediately could smell and feel the menthol lol... Opened the butterfly doors on my Parker 99R and added a Wilkinson blade. First pass I went straight down. Nice shave as I could here the Parker slashing through hairs and not a single nick. I lathered up my face again and went across the grain ear to mouth for a second pass, and could hear the Parker slashing through some more whiskers. I then felt across my face for any survivors. Feeling which ways would be against the grain and remembering. Then using the brush added more lather to about five silver dollar sized spots on my face and neck. I got a little over confident after cleaning off all but the last spot on my neck on the third pass. I did get a small nick on my neck applying too much pressure to the razor. A cold water rinse and pat dry. I was so surprised how soft my face was. Not a single whisker is felt and only a small nick from my over confidence. All in all my first DE shave is possibly the closest nicest shave of my life. A hour later I find myself touching my face and neck and feeling like WOW!!! Im sold. Now, shaving down I feel great about. My technique is not fantastic on 2nd and 3rd pass. I had a tough time maneuvering the Parker. I think as we get into this technique will improve and then so will muscle memory. Sorry for so long winded!!! Thanks for this exercise!!! My 30 days start now and this will be my setup for the project.
