OK, this black war tech popped up in front for a ridiculous BIN price so I snapped up. The black handle is in pretty good shape and the head is nice. What I want to know is if it is correct, because Mr. Razor shows a slightly different head. I also know that Gillette used up parts from other razors, so os it real or should I call it Frank?

Yeah that looks like a 30's era NEW long comb cap and guard. I think your handle is supposed to have a closed comb guard like the normal 3 pieces Techs. I like the black and gold look of it though.

Gillette ceased production of the NEW in 1938-39 and Gillette came out with this handle for the war effort three years later. Gillette was making the Tech around 1938.

    Call it "Frank!"

Frank or not I like the black and gold - very unique.

Would the lack of patent numbers make it a New Deluxe head?

I believe the thinking is that only the De Luxe handle models had the possibility of having serial numbers. Your guard and cap looks like a standard LC NEW.

Oh, no you di'n't! Don't even go there!

When I asked about New pedigrees, I learned that you have to be an accomplished razor phrenologist to figure it out. I just called it a New and ran away screaming.

Be careful what you ask for... and good luck! ;)

NOTE: My inquiry was actually more about the handle, but did you see this? All about the New Deluxe head and very informative!:D

What was the purpose of the longitudinal grooves on these handles? To save material?

Well, it makes it nice to hold.

Because the handles are hollow, it didn't really save material. I suspect they were rolled and then seamed. If so, then the grooves have to be for grip or aesthetics.

You can bank that two cents! ... or just leave it on the sidewalk if it isn't worth picking up ;)

2 more cents... COOL Thanks! That will help me buy more with my RAD, six more yesterday including the black. Got the Weishi 9306C in yesterday and the A and the DS hitting next week. Those razors are heavier than I thought they would be BTW.
