I got a Remie to start off with but was PIFed an ej89. The EJ is much more solid and forgiving for a beginner. Either that or I got a lot better pretty quickly. I second the suggestions for a blade sampler . I built one at maggards razors and was very happy with it and the service.

Something on the mild to medium aggressiveness meter such as an Edwin Jagger DE89 series or a Merkur 42C (1904 Classic). The EJ is about $35 the Merkur about $30. If you want to go vintage a Gillette Superspeed is a great shaver. Looking at about $20 for a nice one.

    Oh and welcome!

Good call on the EJ. I ordered a cheap Lord l6 and am already wishing I went with the ej but will keep the Lord as a travel or pass along.

For an inexpensive choice for brush and soap, the Van Der Hagen luxury set has been well recommended for beginners on here. Mine will be here tomorrow so I can't speak from peronal experience yet. Only $25 on Amazon for a badger brush, stand, bowl and soap.

A merkur 34c hd or a Edwin Jagger de89 are both excellent razors and mild for beginners.. It's great to use everyday
