For ex. it reads that stubble does not grow stronger if you cut it. That's a myth that many people still believe.
Sample from article..... About 15% of men refuse to shave their faces due to the discomfort they experience from shaving. How large was the poll sample size? 10? 100? 1000? Only 3% of all men who abstain from shaving do so because they simply do not care to do so. Again, how large was the poll sample size? It is estimated that 85% of men who shave, prefer to wet shave. Estimates based upon? 94 million men in the U.S. alone (90 percent of America’s male population) and about 1.6 billion men worldwide age 15 years and older remove hair. Remove hair from where? Face? nose? back? Legs? Between eyebrows? Nether regions? 1.3 billion of the men in the world shave with a blade and razor. Was this a door-to-door poll?
I read somewhere, I think on the interwebs, that 83% of statistics are wrong approximately 78% of the time.
From the 'facts'on the list; 38. The first safety razor was patented in 1901... From elsewhere; The term (safety razor) was first used in a patent issued in 1880, for a razor in the basic contemporary configuration with a handle attached at right angles to a head in which a removable blade is placed (although this form predated the patent).
Always be skeptical whenever anything is written or spoken using passive voice (Yes, I am aware that I wrote that sentence using passive voice). It means nobody is willing to take the credit or the blame for the subject of the sentence. It is estimated that... I'm pretty sure the trash was taken out... I'm pretty sure those bills were paid... Notice that what's missing from all of those sentences is the "by whom was it done?"
But without passive voice, what would happen to the "History" channel?! I refer specifically to 'Some experts believe...' It is used as proof for everything from ancient aliens and buried treasure to superhuman powers and occult shenanigans. Can't really come out and say "this guy with a conspiracy website that lives with his mom believes-". Doesn't have the same ring to it.
46.3% of all TSD members are skeptical on lists posted from the internet. 99.6% of all TSD members are skeptical on the accuracy of my numbers from the sentence above.
Someone should post the list as a true/false type of test and see what people answer it might be fun..
