You know honestly I do feel that I have saved a lot of money with this hobby--at least when compared to the cost of my old Mach 3. That being said I tend to stick to what I like. I will try new things and get new shiny things from time to time but I'm pretty sensible about it I think.

I think that there are many who go through an initial phase where they acquire lots of gear but when the phase passes they go back to treating shaving as they did before, replacing blades and soap as they need them. At that point the savings kick in. So the key is maintaining a little discipline during the initial stage... Which is why I'm sticking with one razor, two brushes, and seven soaps so far. I figure I'll burn through the soap in time :)

I SO agree with you. The initial phase when you're so eager to try everything can be very expensive, but after it you settle on the daily routine of products and then you start the saving( or spending less :) )

My take is this, a good quality brush, a razor, some blades, and excellent soap. When you pay your bills with a small US Navy retirement pay. Frugality is a way of life. My brush is a Whippeddog Silvertip, Maggard MR 1 razor, astra sp or Gillette super stainless, D R Harris Windsor soap. Everything is on the bargain side except for the soap. The soap should last for the better part of a year. The shaves are enjoyable without the expense of cartridge blades and the foam in a can.

Yeah there's a lot of truth in that. I wasted some money at the beginning buying things I didn't need\wouldn't like.

First, let me thank you for your years of honorable service. I am seeing more and more the allure of traditional shaving. It meets the the needs of those that want a great shave at a modest price point, as well as those that want a hobby all the way to collectors. An activity literally everyone can enjoy. What's not to like?

Thanks and you're quite right in your saying about wet shaving, it is what we make it.

When my very first box of supplies came and I opened it wild eyed, I assured my wife, as she looked on skeptically, that it was ok because it would save money. In theory I believe this. If you can find the right mix of equipment and stick with it, it can be cheap when compared to the price of cartridges.
But for those of us who enjoy everything about wet shaving and love enjoying a task once a chore, there is too much fun to be had finding and trying new products. As is the case with all things, stay within your means and there is no harm. However, if you are in it to save money that is great too! Anyone who wet shaves is one I'd have a beer with!

I save a ton of money! If I had a 5 year supply utilizing cartridges and canned goo, I would have far more $ wrapped up than I do now! Of course, I would never have 5 years of that stuff stored up... But, yes - I'm saving a bundle!

I have two razors, one soap, one shaving cream, an two brushes - one for home and one for travel. Traditional wetshaving has saved me a lot of money. Most folks don't buy ton of stuff. How many people do you know in real life who have a huge stash of shaving gear?

I turned my brother on to wet shaving. He doesn't feel the need for experimenting with soaps or brushes. When I send him a sample of something new, his reaction is that he will try it AFTER he has finished the soap he already has.

Me? I am all about the experimentation, testing new soaps, seeing how a single edged compares to a double edge, seeing what happens when you mix Almond and Sandalwood, etc.

He saves money. I spend money.

IMHO, it is the personality and mind set of the person that determines if they will save money or spend more money.

Those of us who use either a SE or DE razor for the sole purpose of shaving save a great deal of money over the cost of cartridge razors. Those who think they have to have one or more of every razor ever produced, every soap and cream and every AS splash and balm spend ridiculous amounts of money and get no better shaves than the first group I mentioned. Sounds like a problem with self control not shaving.
