Totally agree all parts are great from stropping to hot towels to the shave and smell of aftershave but lathering... That is where it's at
You said it best..."the shave RITUAL" from start to finish I'm just in the zone, and it's so relaxing for me. I look forward to it and enjoy every step in the process...even clean-up...lol
On the good days when I get a near DFS on the first pass, it's that first cold rinse after pass 1 and feeling the smooth dome.
For me it's one of the first things I think about when I wake up. Gathering all my gear together, the quiet time in the early morning to open my thoughts, smell the soap im using, it's very relaxing. The challenge of the alum to see if I get any stinging. When my wife's home I like if she notices the scent of the shaving soap, my aftershave. I love that 12 hours post shave my face is still silky smooth. The greatest part is, I get to do it all over again the next day.
I concur on the ritualistic nature of the shave being one of the more beloved aspects of wet shaving. Perhaps its the ritual nature that harkens back to my altar boy days where everything was done in sequence with purposeful intent and proper order—but my straight razor shave ritual is one of the highlights of my day. Starting with the decision making & prep: which razor? which soap? which brush?—to the razor prep: proper amount of laps on both the linen and then the leather; the soaking of the brush, application of a hot cloth to the face (if no shower), pre-shave balm application, the making of lather…ahhhh! the making of dense pillows of wondrous lather! The application of the wonderful lather to the face until the proper density is achieved, and then…the moment of truth: the razor's edge in action. Hard to say which is my favorite. Each step has its own merit.
My favorite part is choosing and splashing on the aftershave. I have always wrapping up a job well done. Hopefully no styptic was involved in said job ;>) Did I hear someone say Windsor....
No favorite part (I don't do favorites). But take out any one part, or prevent me from enjoying my shave my way in the least little bit, and I'm not a happy shaver.
The smells and the hot bathroom always are very relaxing , a quiet time to start the day.I have my shave den in the bathroom and it is comforting to look at all the beautiful tools and products for my shave and that moment of decision when you get to choose what to use that day . Glenn
The feel of the creamy lather being applied to your face, the feel of the razor and the smooth feel afterwards.
The whole ritual is very enjoyable for me. But I most enjoy smelling each of my products first and choosing what to use that day.
I like the way my face feels afterward. I like seeing the little dirty specks in the lather as I'm rinsing between strokes. it's sorta gross I know, but I like to see it go down the drain.
