At the ripe old age of 41, I said to myself, "Self, you need to stop buying expensive cartridges and start shaving with a DE Razor. It'll be a better shave, and so much easier on the wallet." Excuse me for a moment whilst I choke on laughter... And I'm back. It is indeed a better shave, no doubt, but I'm borderline destitute from my shave purchases over the last week. My lovely wife, in her infinite wisdom wasn't aware of the beast she was about to unleash when she suggested we run into the Art of Shaving ( I know, I know) while we were out of town, so she could buy me something. Expensive as it was, that was just the tip of the iceberg. Walked away with a medium Sandalwood starter kit, a Muhle R89 razor with some Merkur blades, and a little acrylic brush stand. Innocent enough, and she did something incredibly nice for me. First shave, hooked. No nicks, no scrapes, the sensitive parts of my neck that normally get terribly agitated were calm and smooth. BBS on the first try, and that was with a weeks growth, which on me is pretty dense. This is all well and good, great experience, like the scents, enjoyed shaving for the first time. Now we come to the endless rabbit hole that is wet shaving as we know it. In the last week I have ordered: A blade sample pack with 17 brands in it, Ogallala Bay Rum sampler, Dr Jon's shave soap 5 tin sample pack, WSP 4 tin sample pack, Osma Alum Block, chrome Razor and brush stand, Pacific pre-shave oil, and have a Stirling Soap order with all sorts of pre-shave oil samples, soaps, aftershaves, and a couple lip balms for my daughter awaiting fulfillment. All while I'm finding more things that I want to try out. I know that I'll receive no sympathy around you horrible, enabling, people type persons. I just had to air my disgust at the fact that from now on I'll smell terribly manly, and have ultra smooth skin. I hope you can all live with yourselves knowing that the information that lead to my financial ruin was mostly gathered here. I say Good day... -dave
Welcome...and yeah...this is the last place you need to be to save money. I need someone to take my paypal app away.
Welcome to TSD. Sounds like you have already gotten most of the stuff you need in the short run. Many people end up loading up on the software (soaps and such) when they start.
Sympathy.... Hmmmmm..... I tell you what, you pass my 8 month total of 168 razors, 2500 new blades, several dozen packs vintage blades, 17 vintage hones and strops, 11 blade banks, 17 brushes, 12 vintage shaving stick tins, 16 vintage shaving mugs, and assorted creams, I will give you sympathy. As a bonus for surpassing it, just to make it interesting, I will personally drive out and mediate while you and your wife sign the divorce and/or bankruptcy papers. And yes, my wife, the pen fanatic, did approve and allow my indulgences. Welcome to The Shave Den! Enjoy your stay and your new inexpensive hobby.
