Totally new, and there is SO much information on this site one could read for days on end just about cream. Narrowing it down seems a bit over whelming as I am not in tune with names and brands, or the ins-and-outs of glycerin based or whatever it may be. In short, I want something that offers a thick lather that gives a smooth glide to the straight blade. What should I be looking for in material make up of the cream and any brands i should favor/avoid? Just going to take a shot in the dark and pick up a can or 2 of whatever is recommended. So often I read "just jump in and go from there." Thanks!
First off: Welcome! If you're looking for a good, solid cream for beginners, I'm going to suggest Proraso Green, Red or Blue in a tube, and Taylor of Old Bond Street creams in a tub. In any of these, whichever scent strikes your fancy, the products are all going to lather equally well. These are all great products that are very fool proof as well as being high quality, so for a beginner they're a great launching pad.
Starting out, not wanting to break the bank Taylor of Bond Street. They are great performers. Dip your damp brush in and just get a bit on the tips then swirl around your face. I made a video for my brother. 30 seconds start to finish for a better lather than he had ever had (before wet shaving)
While I have several creams from TOBS which are all top performers, I think that La Toja is significantly better, and can be found for well under $10 for a large tube.
Is there a place to go to pick these up in regular department stores like Bed Bath Beyond or similar? The nearest legitimate shave shop is forever away.
You can't really go wrong with Proraso. It is very easy to work, good skincare, almost foolproof lather with any brush.
I like TSD products for their slickness. I try to make sure TSD is on deck for my Saturday Str8 Shave.
As mentioned Proraso or TOBS would be great. If you want to find something local try Nivea shave cream in a tube. Very slick and available locally at CVS, Walgreens and many supermarkets.
