I was running low on Clubman (as I happen to like the scent) and for variety, replenished with Clubman Classic Vanilla. It's excellent too with a more refined barbershop scent. Very masculine and clean.
I'll have to give that a shot. I used Clubman this evening, and my wife says that I smell like she remembers her grandparents bathroom smelling. I took it as a compliment
I love the smell! Unfortunately the GF says that Clubman and Oldspice remind her too much of her dad and grandpa, respectively. Well.. Guess that's the last time I purchase either of those!
Course as Gary said...That is a costly solution.....Maybe if you take their advice and Switch....SWITCH TO THE LILAC VEGETAL !!!! Then they will either learn the error of their ways. Man, I'm sooo lucky my Sweetie actually Loves Clubman, and the Clubman Classic Vanilla, and Aqua Velva and AV Musk... but The VEG....Luckily she's young enough that her Dad wasn't really part of the Clubman Generation...So the only AS's that reminds her of her Dad is like Acqua di Geo, or Brut, Cool Water.... And yo 'cef'.....it was your wife's sink?....Heh,Heh...Man, her sink probably has been smelling like an open bottle of Clubman ever since...maybe she is used to it, or better yet, she might have grown an affinity for it by now... BTW....I do like the VEG....I think it smells like Lilacs....But, the other day I was driving into Seattle and when I passed Exit 13 on Rt90 I smelled The Veg, really strong...I smiled and thought, Man, there must be a ton of lilacs around here in bloom...That night on the news there was a story about a Urine smelling chemical spill at Exit 13 and everyone was complaining....Ha,ha...They said it wasn't dangerous but it smelled so much like a cat box that everyone was calling the Govenor and stuff... Opps,....and I was thinking it smelled like the Veg.......Hmmm...
Man...I know YMMV and all, BUT......Clubman Special Reserve is like putting on a high quality WWII Leather flight jacket.....I tried one on the same day I tried Clubman SR and it was the exact same smell...It smells more like real leather than the Creed English Leather which cost over $100 an ounce...Bravo, to Clubman for that one....Whoot and Bully.... And all these cracks about only Old Cats digging Clubman...My wife thinks it's a very refreshing new scent...I swear, she thinks it's a modern scent because it doesn't smell like 'Cool Water' or any of the New Aquatics or Diesel ....most people today don't remember those old Barber Shoppes of our youth, anyway....except for us oldies...When I wear Clubman, especially the Vanilla I get more compliments and also young ladies asking what I am wearing than all of the other Drug store frags put together....except of course for Aqua Velva Musk.... So the lesson to be learned here would be....you better be careful if and when you layer Clubman Vanilla and AV Musk.....Its just not nice to upset an office full of young ladies like that.... and you might have to hold straight pins in your mouth to keep swarms of ladies you don't know from kissing you.........Stay away from crowded malls and subway trains...lol!
I was in the Philliphines with my girlfriend and after my shower and shave she said 'wow, your aftershave is way too strong.' Back in Seoul when she visits my place we use separate bathrooms so it's has time to disappear. Clubman doesn't last long on me so the instant exposure combined with the heat and the small room was too much. She only likes perfumes she gives me and never ones I buy on my own so I discount her opion. Then again the only compliment I got wearing Clubman was from myself.
Women have forgotten or never learned what a masculine scent smells like. They have (as many men have) been conditioned by corporate marketing with regard to so-called "modern scents" that IMO smell feminine. I've read numerous comments, by mostly younger members, that their wives or girlfriends think Clubman, Aqua Velva or Old Spice smell old fashioned or remind them of their father or grandfather. News flash, what you are smelling is called masculine! The corporate marketing that almost made DE shaving obsolete has also made the drugstore aftershaves obsolete and out dated (why sell $7 aftershave when sexy magazine & TV ads with beautiful women in them will let you sell it for $70?). 10-years ago when I started DE shaving and using traditional aftershaves, my wife didn't like them either for the same reasons. If I put one on today she'd tell me I smell like a high school kid. Guys, we've got to take a stand and start smelling like, men! It's your choice guys, do you want to smell like a 16-year old kid with acne or a man?!
It is funny though....older ladies think the Old Spice and Aqua Velva reminds them of their Dads.....But young adults and their parents, in many cases were part of the first generation where their fathers didn't were AV or OS because chicks thought it reminded them of their Dads...therefore, for the most part it's kind of new again.... When I wear Clubman in Istanbul, Turkey they think it's some very Modern American AS....And they dig it.... Many of my young Trumpet Students in Eastern Europe were paying like $40 for a small bottle of Old Spice or more for Aramis....Forget Clubman, 60 or 70, and the Special Reserve you could name your own price.... Everything is relative.....Even I paid a fee higher than I will admit for a bottle of Clubman from a Drug Store when I was in Turkey....That because I was thinking it was unavailable at that time...We are very lucky to be able to snatch up a 6.5 oz bottle for under $10 at Walgreens....are you kidding me....Best deal in the World....
I had never actually smelled this, and saw it in a drug store today. So I bought it. I opened it near the pharmacy while I was waiting for my meds, and my daughter bumped my hand. There is a CVS in Lawrence, Kansas with a chair in the pharmacy waiting area that smells VERY strongly of Clubman now. You could smell it in the entire store when I left. I don't know what SWMBO will think of it. Best just to suprise her like I did with the old spice, right?
Better to ask for forgiveness than permission. Clubman is a scent I really enjoy and still wear in the right situations... Good luck with your lady. She certainly can't complain about the price if she likes it. About $7 every 20 years lol....
If she doesn't like it, I may use a few drops in the jeep to make it smell good. It seems strong enough to use this way, and it smells better than the pine trees.
Yeah, SWMBO is not a fan of the Clubman scents at all. The Bay Rum she can tolerate, and saying she tolerates is being generous. But she loves 3 of the Fine AS, so that works for me...
My wife, who shares a house with four men (my 3 sons & I) knows all too well what men smell like! By the way, roll back the cologne clock about 100 years and popular masculine scents were distinctly floral— rose, jasmine and even lilac. I venture to guess that 'tastes in scent' moved away from the floral and migrated more towards the powdery spice realm (Clubman, Old Spice & the like)
My wife is considerably younger than myself. Every time I wear one of my old-school aftershaves such as Pinaud Bay Rum or even Clubman she says I smell like an "old geezer." She has given me many fragrances which her brother or cousins wear, but very few of them appeal to me.
Well, I didn't even get the bottle open and she is not impressed. I had opened it a few hours earlier, and apparently the whole bathroom and hallway smells like cheap cologne now. Going to give it a try this weekend, so I don't make people at work cry if it is bad, but the outlook is not good at this point.
That's pretty much how original Clubman got banned from my house. She claims after I put it on that the whole house smells like it for hours after. Also after several weeks of me wearing it she decided that it smells "like old man." I think it smells like a barbershop.
I'm lucky. Nothing has been banned as of yet. I'm a fan of Clubman. Very clean smelling. It is a bit strong though. I think I put on too much one time, and everyone at work kept asking what smelled like baby powder.
I love the Pinaud line and more importantly, my wife loves them! Says it smells manly instead of girly! After all, do we really wear AS or cologne for ourselves or others?! Hmm, a little of both I guess. Since my SO and I both love it, send the stuff your SO and/or family hates this way and help make my wife happy. Remember, happy wife, happy life!
