I'm curious my fellow shave den dwellers how do you decide what razor to use on a given day? Do you have a set rotation that you follow or do you just grab what ever strikes your fancy. I tend to have a current favorite razor that I use about every third day other than that I use whatever seems right at the moment. The current fav is a merkur 25c, nice and mild yet still effective. Also how many razors do you use on a routine basis? I know a lot of folks collect razors and have tons of them, I'm curious how many you routinely use.
I go with what's working really well at the moment, and if I'm inspired by someones SOTD I'll change up. And finally if a razor has dust on it, I'll clean and use.
I have made a spreadsheet listing all my razors (40). Throughout this year, my goal is to give each razor 7-10 days of use. I will be alternating between DEs, SE, and injectors. This month, I am doing my adjustables, Gillette and Schick. So, all my razors will get some loving this year.
I just go with what I fancy using, or something that is very different to what I am currently using. Although lately I find myself liking the Slim, Stealth slant and Pils more than the others. .....for now.
I set up the razor, brush and soap on the countertop the night before but they often change in the morning based on how I feel . For the week days I have 8 razors I really enjoy and they get most of the work. On the weekends when I have more time I like to try the newer stuff. Glenn
With DE razors, I used a variety of them in a regular rotation, then narrowed the field down to less than handful of the 'keepers.' I've since narrowed the list down to about 3 and will work them in maybe once a month or so, if the urge to use a DE strikes...
Hard core rotation of DEs Mon-Fri. Hard core rotation of Str8s on Sat. Hard core rotation of SEs on Sun. Never use the same razor two days in a row. I only use the same razor more than once the same week when I travel. Even then I take two to rotate.
Good question. I only have 4 razors: Merkur 37C, Feather AS-D2, Mühle R41 and an R89. So you see I have two "mild" razors and 2 "aggressive" razors. I like to switch back and forth between the two types, it keeps me thinking and focussing on my technique.
I'm pretty new to DE shaving, so for now, I'm using my EJ DE87 Mon - Sat, until my technique improves and I find the blade I like. But on Sundays, as long as I'm not in a rush, I will shave with my Dovo Straight razor. I use the straight because I want to get and maintain the skill of using the straight, but for now, the efficiency ease of the DE makes it my favorite shave. I just sent my Dad's 1972 Black Handled Super Speed into Razor Emporium for a Tune Up job. So when that razor returns, I will be rotating into the Super Speed. I plan on making the Super Speed my special occasion razor since this razor has the most sentimental value to me.
I usually pick a razor and stick with it for a while. I find I get the best shave like that. If I change it up to often I get very inconsistent shaves, not comfortable at all
Right now I am doing a 30 Day Rule using one of my Razor's my Above the Tie, R-1 with Kronos Handle. When I am done doing that it's which ever one I want to use. In June on my Birthday, I will use my Birth Year Razor My Gillette 1951 Gillette W-2 Super Speed DE/ TTO {Birth Year Razor} *. On Saturday my Mom and Dad would have been married 69 years. I do not have a 1946 razor. When I find one it will be the one usd on that day.
I don't have a big collection. So choice is limited. I have four. One I don't like. It's too cheapy and light. My black beauty I just don't seem to get on with. So it leaves me with two. My muhle r89 and my wilky sticky. I just love my sticky. I change a blade every 3 days, so any razor I do use gets three straight days in a row. That's my only rule.
I try to use all of my DEs for a month. That helps me get familar with them. Problem is, I am trying to learn to use a shavette right now, so they aren't getting as much love. I will also start using a straight pretty soon, so I don't know. I have been doing a specific focus for every month this year, and plan to keep that up. It is helping a bunch.
Easy. I walk into the bathroom, I use a simple eenie meenie miney mo procedure to choose between my 1 razor. Then I shave.
