I have ordered a few pucks of shaving soap without containers and while on amazon I saw this tin advertised in multipacks. The price for 6 is quite impressive and makes considering them as worthwhile candidates. The diameter of the 4 oz screw top tin is 3 1/8", width: 1 3/16" according to the answer a question posed regarding dimensions. I am also considering a wooden bowl, but this seems ideal if you buy more than one loose puck at a time. Would anyone comment as to whether these would be good to keep pucks in or not? Is there a better alternative for the price?
Those are similar to the tins that Stirling sells. I will say that mine have developed some spotty rust over time. I don't know if the same would apply to those, but the possibility is something to factor in.
I would be concerned about rust as tin and water don't always play well together. I know that papermart.com sells some water resistant screw top tins. They have some type of rust resistant coating, but I don't know if that would last with lots of use...if you lather straight from the tin. They may be just fine for storage though.
For me, the Stirling medium sized tins are the right size for most pucks. Their dimensions are: Diameter: 4", Height: 1.125"
About an ounce too small, in my opinion. That one wouldn't leave much "slop" room for loading a brush.
I've found that I don't really like the smaller tins, like Stirling, for loose pucks. I'm fine with the 8 oz and 5 oz tins used by PAA and Mike's. Plenty of room to load. For the smaller 4 oz puck sizes, I actually prefer the plastic cream tubs. I've got one from CRSW and one from TOBS that both work great for my Stirling pucks.
Ikea has metal containers with a magnet on the bottom and a transparent top. I had used them with Crabtree & Evelyn soaps, cutting out the label from the packaging and putting it in the lid. It's been so long since I've used those soaps that I don't recall how tight or loose the fit was, I just remember it seemed to work pretty well. Agree with Rollah completely. Specialty bottle has got it all, and they are excellent folks to deal with. http://www.specialtybottle.com/
I mostly use the small ziplock type bowls from dollar tree with the blue lids. depending on the soap I can melt/grate it into place. it is just a bowl with a lid. I don't understand spending a lot of money for wooden bowls when its the product inside that im concerned about. by doing this I can afford to try more soaps/creams
I buy 8oz tins from The Container Store. They're perfect IMO. Plenty of room and I prefer the uniform sized containers. I transfer just about any soap/croap I know I'm going to keep to one. Then I just peel the label off of the original container and stick it back on top of the tin.
Personally, I rather like the"shoe polish" tins that Stirling supplies. About the right size, retro looking and stack pretty nice, and cheap to boot.
