Vintage Old Spice Soap?

Today I stumbled upon an Old Spice Mug (1964-1970 per Old Spice Collectibles) that still has the soap and plastic lid. The soap has barely been touched and the ship stamped into the soap is still in almost new shape with sharp details.

I've seen members here mention using old soaps but has anyone braved a nearly 50 year old soap that was already opened? I figure if I rinse the dust out and get past the first layer of crust there may be good soap still left to use.

Is this old Old Spice a must try product or am I better off just dumping it and enjoying the mug?

    After the rinse:
Notice how much of the ship rinsed out further confirming my suspicions that this soap was basically new...

I would not throw away the soap. I haven't tried vintage OS but Ive heard that the older the better with vintage soaps. give it a try. if u don't like it im sure u could sell it to someone on here. people are always looking for stuff like that

Wow, what a find! Does the soap have any scent left or does it smell rancid...like old oils? What color is it? If it has no bad odor and hasn't turned an ugly "orangish" color it may still be good. Generally, with handmade soap (don't know if Vintage Old Spice was handmade/artisan) the longer it ages the better the soap. If you lather up a soap with a 4 or 6 week cure, then lather it up months later you'll definitely feel and see the difference.

Not sure that applies to one that's 50 years old though!!!

Use it. Just give it a rinse and it will be good to go. Old Spice is one of the few vintage soaps I have not used yet. Williams Mug, Barbers Bar, Tonsorial, Yardley, Seaforth, an Unknown shave stick. My face is still here and smiling.

Use it. I have some vintage Old Spice soap that is probably near 40 years old and some Colgate Barber's soap that just may be pushing 60+. I just gave 'em a rinse prior to first use.

I'd use it. I can't see it hurting anything.

Use it, or rename it "Older Spice" and sell it for a premium.

As everyone else has said use it! I have a puck of it myself someone gave to me and it still smells fine and looks great. I also have 2 pucks of vintage Williams and they washed off fine and started to create soap in my hand. Good find!

You'll wish you had more when it's all gone.
    Great stuff.

I've used several different 50+ years old vintage soaps including Old Spice and they have all been excellent. Dissipated scent is not a problem for me. The lathers these old soaps produce is magnificent.

This soap exploded into a great lather and I am glad I had you guys here to talk me into at least trying to salvage it! I will be giving it a go either this evening or tomorrow morning for my SOTD.

its always worth giving any vintage product a try if it is still good (ive heard aftershave can get a bit weird with age)

    good score!
I just got one myself earlier this week but hadn't posted it in "The Haul" yet.
Of all the Old Spice mugs I've collected, I've never picked one up that had the soap still in it till now.
I picked up four mugs on Wednesday and one was just like what you've pictured - a late 60's with soap and plastic lid.
Mine smells pretty good but it looks new too so I hesitate to use it.
I bought some old Colgate soap one time and besides not lathering well, the smell was less than desirable.
Maybe I could shave some soap off the bottom of the puck so the top of the puck with the ship will still look new.
