My just over one year old Semogue 1305 broke apart tonight. I have taken good care of it as evidenced by the fact that the paint is still perfect on it. My initial reaction was to just glue the knot back in. Taking a closer look, it doesn't appear the glue failed. It also looks like the handle is made of particle board beneath the knot??? If you look, you can see a chunk of the particle board still stuck on the bottom. I can rub the fibers right off of both pieces and have serious doubts that gluing will hold for any length of time. What are my best options here? It's not an expensive brush, but I have months invested breaking in the knot.if I can't salvage the handle, is there a good new or vintage inexpensive handle I can set the knot into? It's spec'd at 22mm Help!
Thanks Kevin. Will the cheap particle board in the handle sand down smooth? It's damp, and so loose that I can scoop layers of wood fibers out with my fingertip...
I would sand it down until you feel you've hit something solid—once it is dry. Rough is okay = better holding power with the epoxy. If you're in no hurry, you can let it air dry in the sun for a week or so
I would probably bore a 1/4" hole down the center of the handle about 3/4" for an epoxy anchor too, but I'm a tinkerer.
Honestly, I'd view your misfortune as an opportunity to experiment with loft and hole size. If you take the time you'll end up with a dandy boar brush. A redone SOC.
