MAYhem & Mercy May 2, 2015 Prep - Hot shower and towel Brush - Tweezerman Badger Soap - Williams (Is it a soap or not?) Mug Shaving Soap Razor - Vintage Soviet - the "Soyuz 1" Blade - (1) Post - Alum, Nivea Replenishing Post Shave Balm Day two of MAYhem, day one of the Zaza blade. This is a blade from Turkey and I have rarely seen it mentioned in forums. However, it is usually not mentioned favorably, though I do think I saw one fan. Well, YMMV as we all know, especially on blades. For me this is a pretty poor blade. I noticed immediately that it lacked something important to a blade.....sharpness. It also tended to pull a bit indicating it was having trouble cutting which means it lacked......sharpness. It didn't help that the Williams and Tweezerman are woefully bad in attempting lather. Planned Sunday SOTD Gibbs No15 adjustable razor Gillette spoiler blade (modded to fit) Butterscotch badger brush (unknown mfg) Myrsol Emulsion preshave Castle Forbes Lime EO shaving cream Captains Choice North aftershave Royall Lime AS cologne Im trying the Vintage Gibbs razor for the first time. Standard DE blades need to be modded to fit the razor but it was an easily done with a dremel. The little butterscotch handled brush will be getting a new TGN silvertip knot next week so figured I should use it at least once before the restore. The original knot is way too floppy for my liking.

SOTD Saturday May 2 RAZOR: Star SE Blade: CVS "generic" carbon Brush: WD Silvertip Soap: RazoRock XXX AS: Dollar General "Classic" I finally had success with a SE razor! This razor (generously provided by @Omaney) was something I really wanted to try. But, if you read my earlier post a week or 2 ago, the blades it came with (Try-A-Blade) were extremely rough. At Omaney's recommendation I picked up SE blades at my local CVS. What a difference a blade can make! While it wasn't a BBS the shave was quite close and fairly comfortable. I found that the Star razor makes it really easy to find the correct angle. When I wasn't sure I just placed the head flat against my cheek and started over. I need to "brush up" on my SE technique, but I'm happy a SE razor is now in my rotation. Unfortunately, my RAD is now calling for SE razors....damn! (I know, wrong soap in pic. But it's the right razor!)
I recently won a PIF from @Redrock which included a stick of La Toja. I have never tried it before, so I decided to give it a go this morning. The La Toja stick is harder than other sticks I have used and it was difficult to get the soap onto my face, requiring a fair amount of pressure. My first impression of La Toja is favorable, as I got a good shave and the lather, while not obviously outstanding in any category, was definitely a good, slick and cushioning lather. 3 passes and nice & smooth. Sunday: Prep: Hot shower, Neutrogena Invigorating Face Wash, TSD Jasmine Sambac preshave balm Brush: Simpson 56 Best Badger Soap: RazoRock One-X croap Razor: Merkur 1904 41c OC Blade: Bic (1) Passes: WTG, XTG, ATG (1, 2, 3) Post: Cold water splash, Bloc Osma alum, Dickinson's WH, RazoRock One-X AS splash Cologne: Jasmin et Cigarette by Etat Libre d' Orange After a month using the Bamboozled RAKE, I went back to my original DE, the Merkur 41c. I was a little concerned that, because it's milder and smaller than the RAKE, I'd have trouble readjusting, but it was instinctive in my hand. Three comfortable passes, one tiny spot of red on the upper lip, and nearly BBS results, thanks no doubt to the outstanding lather and the sharpness of the Bic blade.

Two passes with the Stirling Black Ice soap cleaned me up very nicely - in fact I was surprised that the SuperMax Blue blade would perform so well today, but it did a great job of giving one last hurrah. The soap lathered awesomely, (it's a brand-new puck!) and gave me very good menthol cooling. Not nearly as strong as what its "cousin" the Glacial Obsidian gives, but still very pleasant.
