    I have a r89 grande. Wondering if anyone knows that if I wanted to order a r41 open comb would I also need the new top part with the screw or just the comb? Thanks!

    Hmm.. I have no idea but, I think if you buy a muhle r41 head it comes with baseplate and top plate. Is it not so?

    That's what I'm not really sure of. On their site they sell the heads. They say either 2 price or just closed or open comb.

    So if I order just the open comb will it work with the top plate I already have

    It comes complete. I have had the Muhle r41 in mind a while. But I really shouldn't haha

    I believe you buy the whole head. I'm not sure, I think it works. Someone else will chime in here.

    I THINK the only thing that changes is the baseplate.

    I don't believe the top plate is the same for the R41 as the r89. The remodeled R41 (2013) has a much larger top plate than previously models and I believe it was made specifically for the R41 modified (not a true) open comb base.
    Both heads fit the same handle, however.

    R41 Top plates...

    Buy the R41 head. Once you look at the landed cost, it isn't much different. If you compare it to the cost of ordering just the comb, if it does not fit you've lost money. The risk outweighs the savings.

    <sigh>
    Looks like one of my work-a-day e-mails. Yech!

    I own them both. The heads are NOT identical. I am reposting with pictures.

    I bought one and it had the head & baseplate. Best purchase I ever made....is my daily driver.

    DOH! I left out re-sale (or trade) value! If you do not like the R41, you can do more with a head assembly than just the comb portion: sell, trade or PIF. Another reason to order the whole enchilada!

    R41: Notice the straight (almost) 90 degree level cuts on the two posts?

    R89: Angled cuts of posts to accommodate the contour of the base plate.

    Sorry for the blurry pictures.
    Hope this clears up the question.
