Trying Straights again.

Many years ago I tried a straight razor for a month or so. My issue was it was not shave ready like claimed and I kept cutting myself on my upper lip in the same spot. A friend is sending me a Feather SS japanese straight to give a try and if I like it I am thinking of getting a Whipped Dog Straight and poor mans strop set to move up to a traditional straight. If all goes well I am thinking of getting a custom damascus straight. I could use any pointers anyone would like to share. I will be doing all sorts of research again as it has been so long.

I'm new as well but I will say don't get discouraged. My first shave was pretty bad, but after looking around online with people who had similar issues I was able to correct my main problem which was angle. It was pretty discouraging when I had been looking forward to this new adventure but I'm sticking with it with the mindset that it's going to be a slow process. Good luck and I hope you stick with it.

Many new straightshavers can perceive an edge to be not ready. Its only by the a good couple shaves do you find the technique to complement the edge. A feather will help pass that by, nice and sharp and smooth.

good luck and dont buy the pakistani damascus customs

I am three shaves in with a true straight, and about 30 shaves with a fixed handle Feather Artist Club SS. Plan a little more time to shave, but it will work. After a few weeks I was getting DFS two pass shaves on the feather. What type of blades are you using?

Not sure yet as they have not arrived. Will update everyone when everything arrives.

Don't be discouraged by early results, it takes time, at least it is for me. The feather is allot sharper and more aggressive and harsher than a straight razor.

For me finding the right angle was the toughest and not keeping my lather wet enough. If my lather is not wet enough it can feel like the razor is dragging along the skin. I also practiced with the Feather without a blade until I felt comfortable with my off hand.

    Good Luck

It's taken a while for me too. (several months actually...)
I agree, don't get in any hurry, and look at it as a long term project.
What was most tough for me was getting to point where I could relax with
the razor in my hand. In the beginning I held it with a death grip, and that just doesn't work.
Over time, I realized that I was not going to do myself any great harm, and I relaxed.
When I did, I found I had much better control over the razor.

I think practicing with the Feather razor sans blade is also a great idea.
Whatever get's you to the point where you are comfortable with the razor
    in your hand is worthwhile.

Best wishes and good shaving to you.
