So, it has gone this far...I am now shaving with dog dresser/grooming blades in order to try out ALL the razors that I have accumulated. Some might call that idiotic or even a sign of commitment - but a lot of you might just see it as normal Regardless, the intent is to use these blades for three days this week...well, that's the plan at least... Loaded up one of these... ...into my Durham 300 razor... ...which didn't make it seem less intimidating.... (Photo with my $2 macro lens on my phone) But it still sure is a purty razor though... Stop stalling and tell us how it went! I'll admit I wasn't quite looking forward to the morning's shave as I normally do. Some of that came from a friend who had just tried out these blades and found them to be so tuggy that he couldn't complete a full pass. So let's just say that the bar was laid pretty low... Lathered up, took a deep breath and slid this beastly, canine-hair-cutting contraption down my face... 1st pass - WTG: Started out treating it a bit like a SE as far as angle goes and had the head near-flat to my face. "Wow, there is zero dragging - it feels really smooth! Love it." "Hmm...is it actually doing anything?" No, it turned out that the reason it was so mild was because that angle was too shallow and the blade barely, if at all, made contact with the face. 2nd pass - ATG: Adjusted the angle a bit and made sure it would shave this time. "Ouch!" "Tu-uu-uggy!" "Wait, is this....ouch...no way" And my three-day experiment with the razor ended after 12 minutes. Popped a 7 O'clock blade into my Weber and finished the shave. Mmm... I am pretty sure it's the blade and not the razor (or me) - but since this is the only option readily available to me I can't see myself going through another two days of this. I may be adventurous but I'm not this dumb Sad in a way, I really love the look of this razor but if I can't shave with it (note: I'm convinced there are a lot of people out there that love this razor and shave with it w/out any issues but for me it didn't work out) I can't see myself holding on to it So I guess the Berkeley Custom Shaver is coming up already tomorrow!
The blades look pretty substantial. Did you try stropping one to see if it would smooth out? I understand that the blades are made for aminal grooming, but still they are razor blades.
What I might do is try one more time tomorrow morning as this morning I had 2.5 days of stubble for it to chew through. Maybe tomorrow's one day growth will be a bit easier for it to deal with.
Your shaving adventures are awesome! Some of the adventures I've look at with a tinge of envy. Some of those adventures (like this one) are best lived through vicariously!! Good luck with the Berkeley.
So now you're buying dog grooming razors and blades and trying to shave with them? I've heard about meth addicts combing their living room carpet searching for small rocks of meth. Why your post reminds me of that story, I'm not sure.
Well, supposedly they are the exact same razor blades that the original Durham blades that got discontinued - and some people have reported great success in using them. I like to, if possible, put old razors to use and not just lying on a shelf looking pretty (which granted this razor does pretty well). I might make the effort to get some of the medical industry blades that also fits this razor and are rumored to be quite a lot sharper but we'll see...part of me feels that "at least I gave it a shot now let's move on".
I think you should notify the animal rights advocates groups at once. the poor little doggies can't speak for themselves. now that you have first hand information. I think you should take it to the streets, man. just don't start peeing on the fire hydrants, your now the face of canine shaving.
I have some Personna people shaving blades in transit for this same razor. I'll let you know how they work on my coat.
Oh man!! I'm so sorry to hear that. That is a looker of a razor. I once tried explaining the wet shaving movement to a friend after about a minute I gave up. I'll save this thread for a reference next time. Love the razor!
Couple years ago I tried the Stanley carpet blades in the DD. It was serviceable but not worth doing as more than an experiment.
