Hanging Strop or Paddle?

Which do you prefer and why? Currently I have a paddle strop with leather on one side and cloth on the other. I use the leather side the most, with the yellow Dovo paste.

I'm thinking about a hanging strop, more for the space/storage factor when I'm not using it.

I prefer a paddle or bench strop. I get better control with it, better control equals fewer rolled edges for me.

With a hanging strop I just get all "stropping in a movie" about things and end up cutting my strop all to hell and/or wrecking my edge.

If you are good with it or have the patience to learn it and have stones to fix it when you do err, give it a shot. Having done both though, I prefer the bench.

I've only used a hanging strop. Works for me.

I use a hanging strop just because...... it's what I learned on. I think a person could find some valid points for using a bench or paddle strop over a hanging strop but I'm satisfied with my edges and see no real reason to change. And all the money I save from not buying a different type of strop I'll spend on soap. Pick your weapon both will work fine.

I picked up a bench strop after watching a few videos on how to strop. Less things to worry about. YMMV

I have always used hanging and like the edges I get. It was a bit rough in the beginning but a nick or 5 later and I still use my first strop. I do use a balsa block after honing like a bench strop and can see the accuracy benefits but I am hanging strop for daily use all the way.

For beginners the Bench/Paddle strop helps develop form (the flip) without much trouble
Once you have the form (the flip) down then the hanging strop will help you maintain the edges better
Once you get the Hanging strop then you use the Bench strop for pastes

Hmmmmm seems like I have written that before hehehe

You can never have to many strops so I advise you have at least one of each. Don't forget to give that strop a sniff! Mmmmmm....leather

Although some older strops have a definite 'funk' to 'em...
