My second brush, again free-form. The handle is Spaulted Maple which came from the wood pile at the back of my house. I left the right side natural grain - no sanding. Finished with Watco Danish Oil and several coats of Minwax Wood and Furniture polish. The knot is a Virginia Sheng Best Badger, 20/65mm Lots of fun to make.
Excellent Ed! Between you and Jim you gents should do a YouTube series "home is where the shave brush is made" beautiful! Kerry
Kerry... a good thought. As as side note........ From cutting the blank to the last coat of finish about 4 hours. The main consumer of time is sanding from 120/180/220 grit. As with my first brush, I prefer the "one-off" look" of the free-form handles. I also do not care for the CA/oil bright and shiny finishes. I prefer to use Watco Danish Natural Oil for finishing. This oil provides protection from water and brings out the natural beauty of the wood. I have several more in the queue. This is a picture of some blanks in some various forms of completion. On the left is a piece of Alaskan Diamond Willow - getting ready to drill the knot hole. Center is a piece of Spaulted Maple with a trapezoid shape. I am thinking on keeping the slant, round the middle??? On the right is a piece of Red Oak. Thinking of a short, chubby style but still free-form. Thanks to all for the kind comments.
Really cool pic of some beautiful hunks of lumber! Should turn out some very unique brushes. A photo sequence or video would be cool to see. Admire woodworkers who have the patience to turn out a work of beauty from a chunk O' nothing!
