  4. YES! The scales make that razor for me. They also make the picture. That you dubbed them Obnoxious Orange makes my day. Thanks, I needed that!:D

  8. When I first got this razor, I was planning on replacing those scales with wood or horn. Like any good mold or fungi however, they have grown on me. I won't say they are my favorite, but they won't be getting replaced.

  9. World Tournament of Blades - Russia vs. the World!!
    June 3, 2015
Prep - Hot shower and towel
    Brush - VDH Boar
    Soap - Proraso Green
    Razor - '59 Superspeed
    Blade - rapira-platinum-lux.jpg (1)
    Post - Alum, Nivea Balm

On to the next pairing of blades. The Rapira Platinum Lux versus the Gillette Silver Blue. Starting with the Rapira. I have used this blade on numerous occasions and it is one of the few Platinums that I truly like. In the superspeed it is pretty mild but that's expected. I doubt either blade will finish up in two passes with this razor. First pass was nice and smooth and yes, a typical mild pass. Second pass, XTG was also smooth with the blade working well. I did end up with a nice cut under my chin but that was a technique error. I added pressure working a Gillette slide up my neck and that's never a good idea. No harm, no foul for the blade. Third pass was neck only and I went back to the Gillette slide and some buffing to finish DFS. Pretty much what I expected with this setup.

Scoring - Sharpness - I'm going with a 2. It is a sharp blade but again there are some sharper. Smoothness - 1. No dragging, pulling, very nice feel. Irritation - 2. The alum bit across the shave, more on the neck. Had it been only on the neck I might have been more generous because I know the extra work involved. However my face also had a burn going so there you go. Result - 2. It's a DFS. A nice DFS but can't claim the baby.

Total - 7. Not bad. Tomorrow we load the GSB up and see how it does. Given my past experience this could be a very very close round.

  14. I was looking forward to a nice shave today. I prepped with lavender pre-shave oil from Art of Shaving, had my Simpson Special Best badger brush soaking in hot water, and a fresh Astra platinum blade in my 1918 Gillette khaki de. The head is open comb for those who don't know. I got a good lather up with the AOS soap I always use, and put blade to skin.
As soon as I got to my chin, the sink basin turned red. Nicks all over my neck and chin. I put the 1918 down and resumed with my closed comb Muhle R89, and finished with a comfortable experience.
I have come to the conclusion, that, for me, the open comb is to aggressive to use every day. Maybe I'll have better luck with a weeks worth of growth.
For now my daily shave will be with my trusty R89 until my Dovo ebony SR arrives.

  15. The Old Style heads are pretty aggressive. They made different kinds of blades back then. Three holes and thicker. You have to be really cautious when using a modern blade in one of those.
  16. Nice wolf! :)
